Talk:Alfred Piccaver/Archive 1

Date of birth

Google tells us he was born either 5, 15, 21 or 24 February 1884. The biography we cite is not working. When was he actually born? -- JackofOz (talk) 11:32, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Doesn't anyone care about this issue? -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 01:25, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
I've placed a copyright violation flag on the article. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 14:16, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
Yes, people do care about this issue but until you tagged it it was highly unlikely that anyone who did care would have noticed. One of the bots that helps with copyright work has been down hence the reason that it's taken over two months from your tagging for this to be dealt with. Anyway in this case I'm confident they've copied from us rather than the other way round. Click the show link in the above backward copy notice for my reasoning. Conflicting year of immigration to America?

The article originally stated he immigrated with his family "when he was two years old," which would put the year around 1886 or 1887. Two sources for that claim is a article from a website, historyofthetenor.com See here: [1]. The other is John Potter's book Tenor: History of a Voice which also lists it as when he was two, but does not list a source for the claim. However, the original statement had no inline citation given and historyofthetenor.com may not be a reliable source.

A 2005 book by Barry Moreno titled "Children of Ellis Island" list it at 1894 (page 115), about 10 years old. Moreno works at Ellis Island and used archival records and passenger listings. However, a later (2008) book by the same author called "Ellis Island's Famous Immigrants" lists it as 1895 aboard the S.S Paris (page 62). There is a passenger list for the S.S Paris, departing September 7 1895 from Southhampton to NY. with a "Master Alfred Piccaver" along with "Miss Annie Piccaver" (presumably his sister) and "Mrs. S. Piccaver" (his mother), but it is not known if he was just leaving the UK or on departing from a return visit. See here http://www.gjenvick.com/PassengerLists/AmericanLine/Westbound/1895-09-07-PassengerList-Paris.html#axzz3mV0ly0r3.

To add to the confusion, an Austrian gov't website at www.wien.gv.at, "Wien History Wiki," lists his parents emigrating in 1893: See here: https://www.wien.gv.at/wiki/index.php/Alfred_Piccaver

Due to conflicting information, I worded the statement to not mention a specific year, but simply "at a young age" he immigrated to the US with his family.Gugvista (talk) 17:13, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
