De-prodding motivation edit

Granted, all links here are red, yet consider a reader looking for information on Alexey Smirnov (any one of them). While we cannot accommodate such a reader by pointing them to an actual article, the very least we can do is mention that there is more than one person by this name (and considering that three of them are Heroes of the Soviet Union, perhaps clear a lot of confusion in the process). Mindlessly sticking to a technicality and deleting this page seems to do more harm in the long run than just keeping this page as it is in hopes the red links will turn blue one day.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:40, May 7, 2009 (UTC)

It's not a technicality, it's the point of a disambiguation page. I don't care enough to bother setting up an AFD, although someone else who finds this page at Category:Disambiguation pages in need of cleanup may be more motivated. But I can't hit "unwatch" without noting something: if a user is looking for one of these Alexey Smirnovs, and he knows which one, it seems unlikely that this page will tell him any more than he already knows. If the user DOESN'T know which one, it seems similarly unlikely that this page will offer any useful information. Propaniac (talk) 18:51, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
If a user is searching for Alexey Smirnov, a Hero of the Soviet Union, the page is going to help them a great deal. If they don't know which one, at least they'll have something to start with rather than an entirely unhelpful "page not found" screen. That said, I don't care about this page nearly enough to protest an AfD, should someone else want to bother setting one up in the future and all of the links are still red by that time.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:59, May 7, 2009 (UTC)
What do they have to start with? All this page will tell them is that the name belongs to three heroes of the Soviet Union and one other guy. I guess they'll be able to narrow the years he was born to four. Propaniac (talk) 19:31, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Apart from the dates of birth/death, they have patronymics to work with, which is a singularly helpful bit of information when one needs to tell one Russian from another Russian with the same first and last names. "Alexey Smirnov" is a very common name (it's definitely not just these four folks); knowing patronymics and dates narrows the search field considerably, thus minimizing false positives. Anyway, that's a moot point now that the page is on AfD.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 20:53, May 7, 2009 (UTC)

I removed the first two as I didn't realise none of them were valid links, so deleted them as I went through them. Boleyn3 (talk) 22:03, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
