Arsenal edit

He hasn't joined Arsenal yet, has he? Isn't he still waiting for a work permit? 140.247.23.64 4 July 2005 15:19 (UTC)

Yes, he is still waiting for it. But he is already training with Arsenal, and has supposedly been presented 13th shirt number. --Monkbel 5 July 2005 17:52 (UTC)
He has received work permit already. --Monkbel 16:47, 17 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Who took away his arsenal photo and replaced it with the homemade one? I think it should be reverted

If the Arsenal one has copyright issues then nothing should be reverted. Chensiyuan 07:26, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I feel Hleb's impressive dribbling skills deserve a mention. I added it but a bot immediatly removed. Matthew.taylor57 (talk) 12:07, 22 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

What was wrong with the photo added by Jackman? It was much better than the underhill one.

Hleb/Gleb edit

Firstly, I don't speak Russian so I'm not the most qualified to talk on the subject. However the Hleb/Gleb issue is turning into an edit-war and a consensus needs to be reached.

Personally, I'm in favour of the use of "Hleb" throughout the article. It's the spelling Arsenal use and he himself seems to use. I have never heard of him going by "Gleb", certainly not since he has been in the Premiership.

While "Gleb" may be a more linguistically accurate translation, it's not Wikipedia's place to rename him.

Opinions? PlayCollective (talk) 01:32, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re:naming conventions, it seems WP policy prefers whichever name is most used and/or recognisable, not whichever is most accurate. But, a note can still be inserted stating the original/accurate name. I know it's terribly frustrating for natives to see their language mangled by customary wrong usage, but that's why a note somewhere in the opening lines should suffice. Chensiyuan (talk) 01:42, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
I agree. It should probably should be briefly mentioned, perhaps something along the lines of the way the Valeri Bojinov article handles it. Put it in, but don't dwell on it, and use Hleb throughout, as he is by far more well-known by that name. VincentValentine29 (talk) 21:53, 12 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
The right writing would be Gleb. But in Belarusian G is pronounced H so according to phonetics it should be Hleb. Mikej007 (talk)
Gleb is not the right variant, since Hleb is Belarusian and Russian. Hleb uses this very variant (Hleb) writing his surname in English. So we cann't say, that Gleb is a right variant--Karybut (talk) 07:01, 7 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
Since when Hleb became right in Russian? He and his brother have always been known in Cyrillic as Глеб (not Хлеб), even before pre-Stuttgart days. The only reason to keep Hleb on the WP pages is that they themselves use Hleb on their shirts. -NineInchRuiner (talk) 08:24, 7 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Interest from Barcelona edit

I don't think this one should have it's own section. It could maybe be emerged with the Arsenal section, but as an own, just because Barca is said to be interested, seems a little odd. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.202.218.230 (talk) 16:57, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I personally don't think it deserves a section at all, as per WP:CRYSTAL. It just seems unnecessary to put these kinds of sections on pages when it is just transfer speculation. This kind of stuff is rampant in football, and if people want to read this kind of information, they're better off going to a tabloid rather than an encyclopedia. If we added a section to a player's page any time a club said they were interested in a player, it would never end, and would get very cumbersome. I'm for deleting it until/unless something happens in the future. Until then, it's mere conjecture. VincentValentine29 (talk) 04:07, 20 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Won't mind if the section is wiped out. Chensiyuan (talk) 04:14, 20 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Request for semi-protection edit

I have requested semi-protection for the article in an effort to combat the recent changes in club. – moonty (talk) (contribs) 21:25, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. I've been trying to help out as well. Vincent Valentine 22:18, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
It's semi-protected for 3 days. Hopefully any rumors will calm down by then or the move will be made official. – moonty (talk) (contribs) 22:27, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
According to the reports (the same ones that are prompting the changes), it would seem as though it will be completed sooner rather than later. However, things could always "go a Nasri" and drag on for quite a while. Thanks again, Vincent Valentine 22:45, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

um he is a barcelona player now.... check out this source http://sport.es/default.asp?idpublicacio_PK=44&idioma=CAS&idnoticia_PK=525574&idseccio_PK=803 from sport.es —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.108.248.168 (talk) 03:26, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hleb is a Barcelona player when it's reported on both Arsenal.com and FCBarcelona.com. Maybe even one -- but not neither. It is currently listed at neither. I'd even settle for BBC Sport... but there's nothing there, either. Reliable sources are key. The site needs to have a good track record. – moonty (talk) (contribs) 04:13, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

There is no need for semi-protection since Hleb is already in Barcelona and he will be presented today at 20:30 local time. Official webpage link, in catalan, but enough to see he isn't there for tourism —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.35.121.77 (talk) 14:04, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

There is no rush to change his club until the transfer is made official. English sites would pick up on that immediately and then we can source it. Chensiyuan (talk) 15:03, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

took off some vandalism edit

just took off the part in the first paragraph that said "never should have left Arsenal." This was vandalism I guess, though it must be said that this is very true, and I think he is even quoted as saying it. 130.160.218.77 (talk) 03:54, 13 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Benfica edit

It's listed on the Benfica article and on the Barcelona one that he's out on loan to Benfica for this season. Unfortunately Soccerbase hasn't updated this yet, so I'm somewhat loathe to do so here until they do and have a reliable reference. I've tried looking round Benfica's site but I don't speak Portuguese and can't find anything referring to this loan on there. I guess it's probably best to wait until Soccerbase updates. IrishPete 07:38, 30 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hleb's agent Shpilevsky yesterday said that his new club is definitely not Benfica. Belarus NT head coach Stange seems to know something as he said Hleb will arrive to team's camp on Tue or Wed with new contract on hands, but refused to name the team. We should just wait wait till 31st when transfer window closes.-NineInchRuiner (talk) 15:24, 30 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Looks like he's gone on loan to Birmingham City. I'll wait until the dust settles from all the transfers before updating anything. It's a silly time of year and you can't really go by anything the papers or media say until the player actually turns out for a team. IrishPete 15:07, 31 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Comment Alexander does appear to be the common name. Interesting however that the Birmingham Mail are using Aleksandr, as e.g. here, which is also how UEFA spell him. Not that I'd advocate following UEFA on English spelling or usage :-) cheers, Struway2 (talk) 13:27, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

VfB Stuttgart edit

Couldn't help but notice the slow edit war going on over the display of Hleb's Stuttgart club in the infobox, so thought we could use a clarification.

Convention on the English Wikipedia is that in the infobox, we display at least enough of a club's name to make it clear what club we're referring to. Piping VfB Stuttgart to just Stuttgart doesn't work, because there is another major Stuttgart club, Stuttgart Kickers (see WP:KARLSRUHER#Ambiguity). So we need to keep the "VfB" so the reader can see which club it is that Hleb played for, without having to click on the link. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 13:41, 2 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • I really fail to see the point in that argument mate. Why can't we write "Stuttgart" and "Stuttgarter Kickers", isn't that differentiation enough? Methinks. Cheers, happy week - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 22:03, 2 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
The point is that we're writing to make things clear for the reader. They shouldn't have to guess what a Wikipedia editor means by Stuttgart. Please see the style guideline section Wikipedia:Easter egg. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 10:04, 3 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
While I mostly agree with the Karlsruher argument linked above, it's really hard to imagine anyone would refer to Stuttgart Kickers as simply Stuttgart. Plus, a reader doesn't need to guess anything as club names always wikilinked, all he has to do is to point a mouse to the word. -NineInchRuiner (talk) 12:53, 3 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I wouldn't think Stuttgart meant Stuttgart Kickers either, but I'm reasonably well-informed on football club names and how they're referred to these days. As the infobox is for a brief but clear summary of the player's career, it's particularly important to make the information in it clearly available to the general reader who isn't necessarily as well-informed as you or I. WP:Easter egg says "You may want to display a text for a link that is different from the linked article title. ... However, make sure that it is still clear what the link refers to without having to follow the link." (my highlighting). Readers using cellphones to access WP, or using the print version, can't just point a mouse at a link. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 13:21, 3 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Statistic discrepancy edit

In the article it says "Hleb won over 30 caps for the Under-21 Belarus side" but on the sidebar under "national teams" it lists "Belarus U-21 24 (5)" - meaning 24 caps, 5 goals. 24 is not "over 30", so which figure is correct?

Hi. His exact number of under-21 caps is indeed 24, that's even including friendlies. The earlier message in prose is either incorrect (I'll fix it), or mis-interpreted (there well may be over 30 of all youth caps together, u21+u19+u17). --BlameRuiner (talk) 14:10, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

2011 League Cup medal edit

This has been removed from the honours section three times now, with varying rationales. It was unsourced, so that would have been straightforward, but none of the other honours were sourced either. It's now the only one that is.

The current regulations for the competition allow for 18 medals for players; I believe this to have been the case in 2011. However, they also say that "Additional souvenirs may be presented with the consent of the Management Committee but shall be at the cost of the requesting Club." See EFL Carabao Cup regulations. Some clubs choose to make that request. Mr Hleb did not play in the final, but, like Scott Dann, Matt Derbyshire and others who contributed to the cup run, he was presented with a medal at the time. Kevin Phillips alludes to that in this piece.

As another editor said in their edit summary, there are pictures. And individual pictures of a player with a medal prove little: maybe he borrowed it from a teammate just for the photo... Unfortunately I'm no good at searching for pictures and my eyesight's nothing special, but in these group photos of the whole team celebrating on the field, each of them wearing the medal they've just been presented with, the chap in the anorak on (or just off) the left hand end also wearing a medal looks like Mr Hleb to me: Image 1 Image 2

As to written sources, there are plenty that mention his medal. Some might just be throwaway lines or assumptions that because he was on the books and played in the earlier rounds, he must have got one. Others are explicit: e.g. Talksport's "The 32-year-old spent time on loan at Birmingham in 2011 and earned a League Cup winner’s medal, despite not appearing against his former club Arsenal in the final", or this Russian news agency piece which says "While at Birmingham, he received a winner’s medal in the 2011 League Cup, but missed the final through injury". cheers, Struway2 (talk) 10:22, 25 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Just a comment. I can't for my life understand why is an "honour" equals "receiving a medal". It's about the weirdest consensus on WP regarding football players.-BlameRuiner (talk) 22:09, 27 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
