Initial material edit
It seems clear that this article was constructed from old text from somewhere (probably the Botanic Society). The source should be given as attribution; and the text edited down to more like our "house style". Charles Matthews (talk) 09:27, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. I have added attribution to conform to Wikipedia:Plagiarism, as is now required. Various bits, such as "It is with his work as a professor in Edinburgh that the members of this Society are most familiar", still betray the origins. Charles Matthews (talk) 22:06, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
