Talk:Alexander Crichton Mitchell

Is this person the same as Arthur Crichton Mitchell? edit

We appear to have two articles describing very similar people with different first names.

  1. Alexander Crichton Mitchell FRSE (1 July 1864 – 15 April 1952), Scottish physicist and head of a meteorological observatory.
  2. Arthur Crichton Mitchell FRSE (1 July 1864 – 15 April 1952), Scottish physicist and meteorologist.

I suspect that these are the same person and either one of the names is wrong or he had Alexander and Arthur as first and second name and sources get confused about which to use. An alternative is that these are different people but an editor has become confused and added some personal information to the wrong page, making them appear to be the same.
@Shyamal and Stephencdickson: As you were the creators of the two articles, do you have sources that can clarify this situation? From Hill To Shore (talk) 18:29, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Good catch! I am unable to find any reliable sources that use "Arthur". Shyamal (talk) 01:05, 26 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I've added merge tags to both articles in case anyone has alternative source material that supports them as separate entities. If there are no objections in a couple of days I'll go ahead with the merge. From Hill To Shore (talk) 01:23, 26 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I found one usage at https://www.rse.org.uk/cms/files/fellows/biographical_index/fells_indexp2.pdf - given the number of good sources that note him as Alexander, it certainly seems like this one is in error. The maintainer of http://indicatorloops.com/mitchell.htm has been the main biographical researcher on the subject and his work. Shyamal (talk) 01:33, 26 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
