Awards don't belong in the lead?

edit

Why not? Bertport (talk) 04:38, 23 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

They can be in the lede, but not the lede sentence. Lee isn't defined by the awards and nominations he has received, however, they should be mentioned later in the lede. BOVINEBOY2008 :) 04:47, 23 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Per WP:LEAD#First sentence, the first sentence should answer, "why is the subject notable?" if possible, and awards certainly contribute to accomplishing that. And please note, it is spelled "lead", not "lede" or "leade". Bertport (talk) 14:05, 23 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
The award isn't why the person is notable, but the work that is done. And the word is sometimes spelled "lede". BOVINEBOY2008 :) 22:54, 23 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
"Award-winning" and sibling adjectives certainly don't belong in the lead without explanation and don't belong in the first clause of the lead sentence ever.
Nor do award category names belong in the infobox. Beside shortening them I have replaced {plainlist} with {{awd}}. -P64

...and the above is why wikipedia has failed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.153.100.53 (talk) 17:53, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

I suspect the variant "lede" started as an in-joke that has taken on a life of its own.137.205.101.185 (talk) 10:21, 1 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

British or English?

edit

Do we know whether he considers himself nationally British as we say label him in the infobox or English as we describe him in the lead? See UK:NATIONALS. --P64 (talk) 21:28, 15 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

"British" is generally said of any UK passport holder, particularly one who is a native speaker of English and who was born and raised on one of the British Isles. There is no two ways about that and it is not a matter of preference. However, people may consider themselves "English" to the extent that they prefer this epithet to the exclusion of "British" --- by such insistence they are likely to be conveying a political message of a nationalist slant. Other than that, one can consider oneself to be both, just as one can deem oneself a human and also a mammal without any logical-semantic conflict.137.205.101.185 (talk) 10:19, 1 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

{{Authority control}} in the footer links some library catalogue data. For now a better point of entry to Lee in the U.S. national library is to search "Lee, Alan"; "Author keyword". Our AL is currently the first surname Lee, number 11 in the list, with 22 hits.

Kirkus Reviews covered both the Iliad and Odyssey retellings by Rosemary Sutcliff and Lee.

(I have used them both at Black Ships Before Troy —we have only the one book article— but not here.) ... and the Metamorphoses retelling by Adrian Mitchell
