Alan Kaufman (writer) → Alan Kaufman – WP:PTOPIC. This was moved in October 2014 as there being no primary topic, but in my Google books search, "Alan S. Kaufman" the psychologist is always referred to as such and "Alan Kaufman" the writer on other topics. The page views are that Alan S. is viewed about twice as much as all others combined, but without him, Alan Kaufman (writer) would be clearly the primary topic: Allen Kaufman gets only a trickle of hits and the DAB itself even fewer. All three entries are also at the disambiguation page Kaufmann, and the two Alans hatnote each other. 89.147.70.233 (talk) 09:14, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Page views are not the sole criterion - were it so, we could just redirect "Alan Kaufman" to "Alan S. Kaufman", link the two in a hatnote, and refer the other via the DAB at Kauffmann. But published sources seem always to refer to the psychologist as "Alan S. Kaufman", the writer as "Alan Kaufman", so those are the primary topics of those titles, each to each. Since more people view Alan S. than view the DAB page (to which the writer's hatnote directs), one can conclude that most people find him without using the DAB page. Even for those seeking Alan S. who go via "Alan Kaufman", a hatnote there is no more onerous than a DAB page entry. 89.147.70.233 (talk) 12:32, 12 January 2019 (UTC)

For Wikipedia disambiguation purposes, John Stuart Mill, John Kenneth Galbraith or Edward G. Robinson are not the WP:PRIMARYTOPICs of the John Mill, John Galbraith or Edward Robinson disambiguation pages. Thus, Alan A. Kaufman, Alan B. Kaufman or Alan S. Kaufman are all considered to be named "Alan Kaufman" upon the Alan Kaufman disambiguation page.

There is also no need for hatnotes atop the two writers' articles, per WP:NAMB. Users researching Alan Kaufman (poet), Alan Kaufman (novelist) or Alan Kaufman (psychologist) are expected to type "Alan Kaufman" and be directed to the disambiguation page. Anyone typing "Alan S. Kaufman" is presumed to know exactly the specific target and not need a hatnote. In the case at hand, since both Alan Kaufmans can be qualified as "(writer)" or "(author)", a more specific qualifier, such as "(novelist)" or "(poet)" would be more appropriate for the subject of this page.

There are many examples of inconsistency, but disambiguation pages usually combine all forms of the given name, for example, the William Kaufman disambiguation page would also include Will Kaufman, Willy Kaufman, Willie Kaufman, Billie Kaufman, Billy Kaufman and Bill Kaufman. • Oppose per Roman Spinner's detailed arguments, with which I agree. An example of a {{hndis}} page which includes three different spellings of a given name is Alan Bradley. I would also add that WP:PTOPICs are notorious for collecting bad links in which are rarely found and fixed, which puzzle readers, and which are bad for the encyclopaedia.
