Is this article for real?

edit

Any article that uses the phrase "known in the colonies as" without specifying which empire/nation is unlikely to be serious. Since this article uses that phrase, I am wondering if anything here is true? Or perhaps it is someone's attempt to be funny, IDK. What I DO know is that such a phrase is profoundly OFFENSIVE, and almost certainly intentionally so.216.96.76.79 (talk) 17:08, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, but you are wrong. That is not an attempt at causing offense, and you honestly just come off as picky here. Considering the context, if you know anything about the "French and Indian War" and United States history, it should be obvious that the colonies in reference are the British colonies which preceded the formation of the United States of America. See Thirteen Colonies. Dustin (talk) 15:22, 30 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
It's true that the term "the colonies", without specifying nation, is colloquial UK English for the U.S. It's well-known, but it is colloquial, just as they refer to Europe as "the Continent", like there was only one or something, or the only point of view for an English-speaker is based in Britain. "The Colonies", in reference to the modern U.S. is certainly condescending (and some of my British friends have admitted that it's intended to be) and borderline offensive. Nobody is being nitpicky. The reader might understand which "colonies" are being referred to based on the context, but this is an encyclopedia article; the reader shouldn't have to read into the context. Referring to "the Colonies" would be fine if it linked to the appropriate article. But it's not necessary. We're talking about events that happened in North America, and there is no reason to use European terms or events, and then put them back into a North American context. - Boneyard90 (talk) 07:46, 4 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
