NPOV

edit

I've made some tweaks to the stub here for NPOV. Our reliable sources don't appear ready to say outright that a massacre took place, but are still using the phrasing "activists report that..." and noting that they can't independently confirm. I suggest we do the same until the UN observers check out the claims, hopefully today or tomorrow. Something clearly happened, and based on the Houla massacre, I suspect that the opposition case will again be vindicated rather than the Syrian government's. But for now I think we need to follow the news in reporting this as someone's report, rather than fact. Sound fair? Khazar2 (talk) 09:08, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Seems fair. We can only reflect what the new sources tell us (WP:V). LukeSurl t c 10:17, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Romanised village name

edit

Various news agencies are using different romanisations of the village name (Al-Qubeir, Al-Kubeir, Qubair, al-Qubayr etc.). Any ideas which one we should go with? I'm guessing this is the first time this village has been mentioned in the Western press so there probably isn't a precedent. Would also be good to have the Arabic name in the text too. Adding links to the names above, we have: Al-Qubeir, Al-Kubeir, Qubair, al-Qubayr. The current article itself is at Al-Qubair. We also have an article on Maarzaf, its parent village. -- The Anome (talk) 22:37, 7 June 2012

Location

edit
Where is it? The best location I've been able to find online by searching all of the above romanisations is for al-Qubayr, at http://mapcarta.com/12673540, which describes al-Qubayr as a set of hills -- not a village -- lying adjacent to Tuwam and Suwayri, both of which are about 5 km SSW of Maarzaf. Anyone know more about the area? 129.127.252.5 (talk) 23:24, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
We now have two possible locations for the village itself, both consistent with both the location above and news reports, based on Wikimapia annotations. See Talk:Al-Qubair for details. -- The Anome (talk) 20:34, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
