"Backward?" and bad numbers

I may be missing something in the translation, but it seems not entirely cool to call uneducated people "backward." This article does it twice.

Also, it first states that the school has 2000 students, then says it has 1115 (boys' branch) + 350 (girls' branch), for a total of 1465. Is the balance contained in the other branches of the school, or is this an error?
