Zetas connection

The linked articles do not mention a connection between Karzai and the Zetas. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.17.114.54 (talk) 21:01, 28 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Chicago restaurant

edit

The article makes it sound like he worked as a busboy or something. The Karzai family owned the Helmand restaurant in Lakeview, which Ahmad ran, and it was well-reviewed locally. Chicago Tribune report. 75.60.7.172 (talk) 16:42, 12 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I fixed this to "worked in a restaurant owned by his family." I also removed the charming but of no importance or relevance Wrigley Field reference.Haberstr (talk) 18:50, 12 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Good, but you really should add the Chicago Tribune reference. 75.60.7.172 (talk) 04:02, 13 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I created/cropped to File:Ahmad Wali Karzai in 2010 (cropped).jpg which is a superior image which I suggest we use for the infobox. Cloutgalego (talk) 18:32, 12 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ahmad or Ahmed

edit

In Afghanistan it is commonly spelled as Ahmad, and I believe that his U.S. documents has his first name as Ahmad.--AlimNaz (talk) 18:46, 13 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I do understand that "Ahmad" is mostly used in the west, but "Ahmed" still is the original pronunciation. I think it should stay the way it is being the right pronunciation, as the literature already mentions "". I think Ahmad in the Qur'an is just for a style purpose. I'm not watching this page, but just gave my opinion. ~ AdvertAdam talk 23:15, 21 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Is there a consensus to keep this page at its current location, "Ahmed" or change it to "Ahmad" or any other variant spelling? An edit war seems to be brewing over the issue with a page move and a reversion, plus an editor changing all of the other instances in the article to disagree with the current title. Other input? I dont care one way or the other, but they should be consistent within an article. Heiro 20:10, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
The majority of news sources use "Ahmed Wali Karzai". John Cengiz talk 20:21, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Actually if you carefully read all sources and then calculate all the different sources, majority of them use "Ahmad". I'm sure that his birth records has Ahmad because that's what everyone in Afghanistan use and I'm sure his original Afghan passport or US passport has "Afghan". But more importantly, all the official Afghan government records and Afghan news agencies use "Afghan".--NorthernPashtun (talk) 21:00, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
The editor seeking to change the spelling left me this message on my talk : "The correct way to spell the name is Ahmad Wali Karzai, not just because Afghans spell their name this way (i.e. Ahmad Shah Durrani, Ahmad Shah Massoud, Ahmad Zia Massoud, Ahmad Wali, etc.), but the BBC News and others have it this way. That is consistent with the sources. Just because a few news reports wrongly put at as "Ahmed" doesn't mean Afghans must change their names from "Ahmad" to "Ahmed". News reporters don't waste time about learning which way is the correct way to spell it.--NorthernPashtun " He has a point, even if he is going about it the wrong way. i'm still waiting on them to jump in here with their input. Heiro 20:26, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

The correct way to spell the name is Ahmad Wali Karzai, not just because people in Afghanistan commonly spell their names this way (i.e. Ahmad Shah Durrani, Ahmad Shah Massoud, Ahmad Zia Massoud, Ahmad Wali, Ali Ahmad Jalali, Ahmadzai, Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai etc.), but the BBC News and others have it this way. BBC is known to be more accurate when they report news. Just because a few news editors wrongly put it as "Ahmed" doesn't mean that Afghans must change their names from "Ahmad" to "Ahmed" or every encyclopedia must write it that way. News reporters don't waste time about learning which way is the correct way to spell it, especially when they have to quickly write an article about someone who just died. In an encyclopedia we are not short of time and we have to be as accurate as possible. Also, Karz is not a different town, it is considered part of the city of Kandahar and is located on the outskirts (southeastern) of that city. See this Panoramio map. In Afghanistan cities do not have border limits as you may see in most developed countries.--NorthernPashtun (talk) 20:24, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

The 2 opposers of "Ahmad", JohnCengiz77 (talk · contribs) and Heironymous Rowe (talk · contribs), appear as people from Turkey and in their country people are commonly named Ahmed. See Ahmad#Transliterations. I feel that they are imposing their Turkish POV here on the Afghans by persistenly changing the sujbect's name from Ahmad to Ahmed. I find this is very foolish.--NorthernPashtun (talk) 20:54, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Excuse me? Did you notice above where I wrote Other input? I dont care one way or the other, but they should be consistent within an article. ? I am also not Turkish or in Turkey or in any way connected to Turks or Afghans for that matter, accusing others of ethnic bias is not the way to win an argument. I just think the spelling should be consistent.Heiro 21:00, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
I didn't mean you being a citizen of Turkey or editing from that country. I was trying to say that your edits relate to that country. You think that the spelling sould be consistent? Do you not see in the BBC News profile "Ahmad"? I called you opposer because you twice reverted Ahmad back to Ahmed. Mentioning someone's nationality or ethnicity is not something to jump around, my ID says I'm ethnic Pashtun. Most editors do explain their nationality on their personal page or in their ID.--NorthernPashtun (talk) 21:05, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
(EC)No, you said I feel that they are imposing their Turkish POV here. I don't have a Turkish POV, I personally don't care which spelling is used, but you moved the article, it was reverted, and from then on it should have been discussed here, per WP:BRD. Instead you proceeded to change the spelling in the article, thereby making it disagree with the article title, making it inconsistent. If there is valid reason to change the naming and a consensus for such a change can be reached, I am perfectly fine with it. You should present links to sources which show your preferred spelling.Heiro 21:12, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

These include official Afghan government and United Nations as well as BBC and other most reliable international and local Afghan most trusted news sources. These are just a few, there are many more sources for Ahmad. On the contrary, the sources who use "Ahmed" are just unfamiliar news editors. They made their own choice by spelling it as Ahmed instead of Ahmad. Nobody that I know of yet is named Ahmed in Afghanistan.--NorthernPashtun (talk) 21:46, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Reaction

edit

It is neither necessary nor practical to list all of the 'NATO Personnel' and 'World Leaders' in this article. As long as there is a reference to a list of the leaders who commented there is no need to add a list of people in this article. Unless perhaps someone would like to add an article of their comments towards this event like how it was done with the recent terrorist attacks in India. I have removed the [who?] tag for this purpose. YuMaNuMa (talk) 06:09, 19 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Introduction

edit

I have tag the introduction as being inadequate it pretty much just jumps from one stage of his life into another stage with simple 1 sentence summaries and comparing the introduction to the length of the article, it's pretty short. YuMaNuMa (talk) 06:12, 19 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I added an extra sentence in there to just briefly cover some of the controversy, but it still may need to be fleshed out. Kirby777 (talk) 09:07, 12 July 2014 (CST)

Assassination section is much too long

edit

It dwarfs the rest of the article. We should shorten it, and expand (a little) sections on Karzai's actual role in Afghanistan during the U.S. war and occupation. That role is why he is a somewhat important person in the modern history of Afghanistan.Haberstr (talk) 21:55, 2 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
