Really a desert? edit

Is the Agate Desert really a desert? I can't find any references that say so. More often it is defined as a grassland, savanna, or prairie. Katr67 17:33, 8 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I second that.--216.244.51.147 (talk) 00:00, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
So can we remove it from the List of Deserts?Sylvia A (talk) 01:16, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Nah, idle speculation by me and agreement from an anon don't mean we've reached some sort of consensus. We need to find some reliable sources for what Agate Desert is or isn't first. However, it is hard to prove a negative... I've been too lazy to dig very deep but I don't think it's not a huge crime of misinformation if it stays where it is.   Done It was removed the {{Deserts}} template. I've cited per GNIS that it is a grassland, but I'm still curious why it was called a desert in the first place. Katr67 (talk) 18:37, 24 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

The plant life is really scrubby, there is little shade, random sand dunes, more dry creek beds than wet ones, and a miserable amount of bold insects. There are lots of agates laying around just under the top layer of sandy dirt. I think "savanna" is best fitting of the terrain, but whoever coined "agate desert" captured the atmosphere very well.
