Islam? BS!

The whole 'oh my poor sinful soul' thing was an accepted embellishment to writing at the time. Perhaps it was a way of stating to any possible reader that the author indeed remembers his faith, despite the lack of mentions of it in adjacent text, to avoid suspicions of dubious moral qualities, perhaps it was just considered to make a good impression, or perhaps chastising oneself for perceived sins was a traditional sort of 'Sorry Santa, I've been bad but I still want the presents' thing. In any case, it is present in so many writings that it hardly demonstrates blasphemy; on the contrary, it is indicative of faith. Think of it as a medieval blog, since that is precisely what it was. 128.195.186.38 (talk) 13:43, 12 May 2008 (UTC)AdieuReply

Very much so. Nikitin's account is also the very first non-religious travelogue in Russian literature. The travelogues he knew were all about pilgrimage. Nikitin must have been pragmatic at times, as in his Turkic notes, he gives the prices of whores as well:

В Ындѣйской земли гости ся ставят по подворьем, а ѣсти варят на гости господарыни, и постелю стелют на гости господарыни, и спят с гостми. [Turkic:] Сикиш илиресен ду [2] шитель бересин, сикиш илимесь екъ [1] житель берсен, достур аврат чектур, а сикиш муфут; [Russian again:] а любят бѣлых людей.

— Afanasiy Nikitin, Khožennie za tri morya

I suppose this citation will be marked for offensive language once a Tatar reads it.Curryfranke (talk) 19:42, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

In russian wikipedia: Afanasy Nikitin was robbed at the mouth of the Volga, and went to India for cheap goods, that not to return home, where he had debts. Sorryformybad Iscarion (talk) 13:21, 8 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
