Possible RQ-12 designation
editThe designation RQ-12A is quoted for the Wasp III by unclassified documents (http://www.navaldrones.com/Aqua-Wasp.html; http://murrieta.patch.com/groups/editors-picks/p/navy-launches-drone-schoolhouse-on-camp-pendleton_849d0968), but an official DoD document confirming that RQ-12A has been assigned to Wasp III hasn't been posted yet. Has there been any official confirmation that RQ-12A has been assigned to the Wasp III? If so, then the Q-12 designation has been finally assigned after being initially requested for allocation to the MQ-1C Warrior by the Army and rejected by the DoD. (This is similar to the situation where X-49 was skipped in favor of X-50 for the Boeing Canard Rotor Wing, only to be later assigned to a Piasecki helicopter.) 68.4.28.33 (talk) 15:32, 27 July 2013 (UTC)Vahe Demirjian

- But according to this the RQ-12A designation applies to the Wasp IV, and shows a quite different aircraft... - The Bushranger One ping only 21:10, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- Also [1], [2], [3]; RQ-12A is the Wasp IV. - The Bushranger One ping only 21:13, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- Given the Wasp III, or Wasp 4 don't exist anymore, and is designated now as the Wasp AE (All Environment) or the RQ-12 now as seen in this datasheet document - https://www.avinc.com/images/uploads/product_docs/Wasp_Datasheet_2017_Web_v1.pdf - I propose this article be renamed to "AeroVironment Wasp AE". If there is no issues or disagreements with this proposal, I will go ahead and change it, so it's more inline with the actual Wasp available from AV, with a new section at the end to cover off, previous versions and naming, where we can move the current images to, and replace with up to date images of the Wasp (as seen here - https://www.avinc.com/uas/wasp-ae)
- Also [1], [2], [3]; RQ-12A is the Wasp IV. - The Bushranger One ping only 21:13, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

- I have requested for wiki commons use of the images on AVs website, but have others to use now, like this from Australian Defence.

- AeroVironment have uploaded the new pictures of the Wasp AE to Wiki Commons so we can use them now. KarmaKangaroo (talk) 04:41, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
- I've reverted your move. I didn't realize you were trying to make a move request, or I would have opposed it earlier. Companies may stop marketing products, but they don't cease to exist simply because they're replaced in the product line. If the Wasp AE is a different product, as it appears, then the best this is to create a new article at AeroVironment Wasp AE. I can help you with that if you're not sure how to do it. BilCat (talk) 06:40, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
- The WASP AE is not a different product, it's merely the updated version of the same Product, the "Wasp"
- It combines the previous 2 versions of the Wasp III to the Wasp AE the "Aqua" and "Terra" into the "All Environment" and yes it has a significantly different design.
- That's why I moved the Wasp III to another section - as a Previous version
- Given this page doesn't seem to be monitored, with the last post, added 8 years ago, and a section I added months ago having no reply.
- In the help page "Moving a page" it state a reason to move a page is
- The subject of the article has changed its name and the new name has come into majority use.
- The AE came into existence and use in the US Armed forces over 10 years ago, and was a replacement of the Wasp III. With the designation RQ-12 that was the Wasp III, now being the designation for the Wasp AE
- I don't believe the AE should have it's own page as it removes the development of the "Wasp" and it's history. Also the current Wasp III page is written in the present tense as if it is a current aircraft.
- And in my day job profession, working in the Unmanned Vehicle space, as part of my job have spoken to representatives of AeroVironment and XTEK in Australia, and have asked them "Is the AE, a updated version of the Wasp III" referencing photos from this wiki page
- As from - https://www.militaryfactory.com/aircraft/detail.php?aircraft_id=1663
- "The Wasp AE is an improved product form of the Wasp III series, introduced in mid-2012. Along with increased operational ranges and a built-in Infra-Red (IR) viewing capability, this mark brings about an amphibious capability that allows the unit to land on water surfaces for recovery. Because of this useful feature, various world navies have taken an interest in the variant."

- "The Wasp AE Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) is the all environment version of AeroVironment’s battle proven Wasp III. With special design considerations for maritime and land operations," KarmaKangaroo (talk) 06:57, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

- As far as I can tell, it's still a different airframe, with different performance specs. That's what I'm going one, and your references back that up. Yes, we can cover them both in the same article, but not the way you did it, relegating the Wasp III to the end of the article. But I still think the best way to handle it is to have separate articles. BilCat (talk) 07:25, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
- Also, you stated,
"The AE came into existence and use in the US Armed forces over 10 years ago, and was a replacement of the Wasp III."
A replacement isn't a name change. BilCat (talk) 07:29, 18 June 2022 (UTC)- It's still designated as the same model of aircraft, and was released as the update to the Wasp III. "Wasp AE is the all-environment version of the battle proven Wasp III Micro Air Vehicle (MAV)" (https://www.avinc.com/images/uploads/product_docs/Wasp_Datasheet_2017_Web_v1.pdf)
- My main point of all this was that if you searched for the AV Wasp, here or on Google, it returned the Wasp III only, which just doesn't exist on AV's website, except for mere mentions by name, indicating to me that it was the evolution of the Wasp, and not merely a new version. And that not only is the Wasp III page outdated, doesn't reflect AV's product of the Wasp, anymore.
- But I'll defer to you, the Wasp AE should have a page, whether it's its own, or not, but it should exist, and least be current. KarmaKangaroo (talk) 17:51, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

Photos used of WASP are outdated
editThe photos being displayed in this page, whilst historically accurate, and important, are no longer accurate for the actual in service WASP UAS.
Current WASP AE looks very different to the two pictures presented in this page, and should be pushed into a historic section detailing the past version of the wasp. Current WASP is this https://www.avinc.com/uas/wasp-ae
