Rename
This page needs to be moved to Adrian Peterson (running back). AD will be a professional player probably by this time next year, or by 2008 at the latest. Once his collegiate career is finished, this article title will be inaccurate. I would have no problem if this change was made now or in the future, but it will need to be made.--NMajdan•talk 17:50, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- The problem is that another Adrian Peterson is also a running back, although in the NFL instead. jareha (comments) 23:30, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- I knew there was another Adrian Peterson in the NFL, but I didn't know he was a running back too. Well, how should they be differentiated? Year of birth? State of birth? College? I dislike doing NFL team like the other Peterson since that can change.--NMajdan•talk 01:18, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
- I believe you are supposed to use the middle initial on both articles. Then a decision on who is probably more noteable (I'd vote for the college one, since he's running for the Heisman) should get the automatic redirect from the non middle-initial page. --MECU≈talk 19:40, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- I'm about 95% certain that this Adrian Peterson's middle initial is L, although I don't know the full name.--NMajdan•talk 20:17, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- I heard from another fan that his middle name is Louis (on OUInsider here: http://mb22.scout.com/fouinsiderfrm1.showMessage?topicID=131678.topic). We can either rename the article Adrian Louis Peterson or just Adrian L. Peterson. I'd probably prefer the latter.--NMajdan•talk 13:12, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- It is obvious that the article needs to be re-named, and I would also probably prefer Adrian L. Peterson. I'm having trouble finding the other Adrian Peterson's middle name, though. As for who gets the redirect, I would expect it to point to this page sine the Chicago back is not even really playing this year (one run for one yard on the season) and was a sixth-round draft pick while this A.P. will probably go first or second and definately in the first round. z4ns4tsu\talk 15:59, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- Ok. Lets do it.--NMajdan•talk 16:58, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

NFL Draft
I listed that he will be drafted in round 1 in his infobox. This isn't debatable and please don't change it. It's an absolute lock that he'll go in the first round. Where he goes shall be determined later.--MP123 04:32, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
- I agree it is a lock. But Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. It is my belief that any speculation on where he will go in the draft should be left off until the draft actually occurs.↔NMajdan•talk 14:07, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
Disambiguation issue
I think Adrian Peterson should be a disambiguation page, and have both players' articles titled with their middle initial (what's the other Adrian Peterson's middle name?) It's very weird the way it's set up right now, with two NFL football players with the same name but only one labelled as "football player", and having the common name redirect to one of them. (I wouldn't title them by their team, as that could change fairly quickly and is not necessarily a defining characteristic.) What do others think? I'll try to do the appropriate reorganization very soon if no-one objects. Grandmasterka 09:46, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
Alternatively, we could keep the redirect and simply change the other article's title. Yeah, let's do that. Grandmasterka 09:58, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
- Take a look at the "Rename" section above to see the discussion that lead to the current naming and disambig. z4ns4tsu\talk 17:04, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
- I did, but I guess I didn't read it very well. Never edit Wikipedia when you're tired and have had a few drinks earlier. Grandmasterka 18:38, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
- Well, I was under that impression that when there are only two articles that would link from a disambig page, its best to just have the main article (in this case Adrian Peterson) redirect to the seemingly most popular link and then have an other uses template on it, just the way this one is. I have no problem renaming the article Adrian Peterson article to include his middle initial but I still think we should keep the redirect to this one since there are only two. Now if a third Adrian Peterson pops up, then we should revisit this issue.↔NMajdan•talk 20:52, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
- Sometimes a two-page disambiguation is good if the items are equally notable. These two are in the same exact profession, so it seemed appropriate. But the way it is now is fine. Grandmasterka 21:01, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Fan Sites
A link to an Adrian Peterson fan site has been added multiple times to this site, and removed just as many (by many different editors). I looked over the manual of style page for external links and found no compelling directions either way. It is my personal opinion that this is neither needed nor helpful to the article as a whole. It is also my opinion that fan sites should generally not be linked from WP articles because they are without exception (and by definition) POV. That being said, I'd like to hear the opinions of the other editors to this article. I'll leave a note for the last user to add the link as well, directing them to this discussion. z4ns4tsu\talk 17:22, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
- Agree.↔NMajdan•talk 17:38, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
I believe my site is very helpful for people interested in Adrian Peterson, my site is number 1 on Google. I have the most Adrian Peterson content on the net. That is why I link to it, I know wiki has a no follow tag for SE's. Meni 23:05, 23 May 2007 (UTC)Meni
- Popularity is not an indicator of worth. Nothing against your site, I've never been to it, but fan sites, in my opinion, don't belong on Wikipedia unless the article is about that site. z4ns4tsu\talk 23:32, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
Re-write
I am currently working off-line on a complete re-write of this bio. I'll try to incorporate any changes made to the page between now and when I get the new article finished, so don't hesitate to edit with more information. I just feel that this page needs to be re-worked from scratch so that it fits the guidlines for biographies and so that the information presented has a better flow. z4ns4tsu\talk 15:59, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
- You can actually find the on-going re-write here if you are interested. I've done little more than set up a goal layout at the moment, but it's getting there. z4ns4tsu\talk 22:04, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Re-write
I'm taken the liberty of re-writing this article and bring it up to a WP:GAC soon. There is some referencing work that needs to be done as well as some expansion of sections. Please feel free to share any thoughts during this process. RyguyMN 04:36, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
fact
Ashlux, please explain to be what this tag implies. Just needs a source?--Nmajdan 02:36, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
- I noticed that at least one of those was utterly superfluous. The following sentence: "Oklahoma beat Iowa State University in that game, but Adrian broke his collar bone diving into the end zone to end a 53-yard touchdown run" was pegged with a fact tag, despite the fact that precisely that information is contained in the link for footnote 17. [1] I removed the tag. I didn't bother following up on the rest of the supposed "citations needed", but wouldn't be surprised if they're all just as unneeded as that one was. Combine Info
Why was it removed?63.215.29.113 02:28, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- It was removed because the information was found to be unreliable, which violates policy. I got different 40 times from other sources. In the end, I don't trust the information that was presented by that scouting site. RyguyMN 03:25, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
Second Paragraph
The second paragraph has 1) grown, 2) too many adjectives, 3) become gross.
- "Peterson was selected by the Minnesota Vikings with the seventh overall pick in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft. Coming into the league, he was known as a tall, upright runner with an ultra-rare combination of speed, strength, change-of-direction agility, balance, and size along with a highly aggressive attitude towards contact, extraordinary effort, and uncommonly outstanding vision & instincts. His extremely unique ability as both a great breakaway and power runner has often caused him to be compared by experts to modern day versions of Bo Jackson, Eric Dickerson, and OJ Simpson, some of the very few best "run-through-you-or-around-you" type of RB talents in football history."
It needs to be redone. The comparison stuff should be moved DOWN, maybe a new section? "Running style"? And make sure that the adjectives are REFERENCED to credible known analyst, coaches, other running backs, etc. Quotes from Stoops, Switzer, Barry Sanders, Billy Sims, Eric, Thurman Thomas, etc., would be great. WikiDon 17:57, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- I see that an anonymous IP has been doing a lot of work with this article. While the work has been appreciative, there needs to be care taken in sentence structure. The summary needs a lot of work now. It's one big run-on setence.
- Anyone that reads this who edits this article, PLEASE, PLEASE be sure to use references as well. The objective of this article is to get it to GA status and having unreferenced statements hurts the cause. Thank you. RyguyMN 02:18, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Adrian Peterson
As mentioned before, there are 2 runningbacks named Adrian Peterson. While this one may be slightly more well known than the other, they are both currently the starting runningbacks for their franchises. The other Adrian Peterson plays for a more well known franchise. I feel that "Adrian Peterson" should link to a disambiguation page because of this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Failureofafriend (talk • contribs) 05:49, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Confusing sentence
"Three weeks later on November 4, 2007, Peterson broke his own franchise record as well as the NFL single game rushing yard record previously held by Jamal Lewis since 2003 when he rushed for 296 yards on thirty carries and three touchdowns against the San Diego Chargers."
This is a confusing sentence, leading one to believe that Jamal Lewis rushed for 296 yards against the San Diego Chargers in 2003.
How about this:
"Three weeks later, on November 4, 2007, Peterson broke both a franchise record and the 4-year old NFL single game rushing yard record (previously held by Jamal Lewis) by rushing for 296 yards on thirty carries and three touchdowns against the San Diego Chargers."

An IP keeps adding the nickname "Purple Jesus" to the article. I've never heard this nickname before, and knowing Adrian is a pretty religious guy, it seems doubtful he'd take that as a nickname. Don't know if you want to add this, but here is a quote from Jeremy Crabtree from Rivals.com:

- If you're talking about the "Purple Jesus" nickname, it's been sourced, so he's been called that at least once in print. However, "A.D." is a far more common nickname for Peterson, and moreso deserves the position of prominence in the lede. Dayewalker (talk) 23:03, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

First Requested move
Why was the name of the article changed? I would think the more permanent title would be more appropriate. Minnesota Vikings can change. I think the previous title should be restored.↔NMajdan•talk 00:03, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- You are correct, what Ksy92003 (talk · contribs) did was borderline vandalism. And although Chrisjnelson (talk · contribs) made it better, it is still incorrect.
- If first name+last name is not available, you go for middle initial, and then you go for a qualifier, like "running back". It should go back. WikiDon 01:17, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- Revert I vote for reverting back this article name to it's previous title. Based on the examples given in the Naming conventions policy page, the qualifier should be based on profession. This article should be renamed Adrian L. Peterson (football player) and the Chicago Bears player should be named Adrian Peterson (football player) since his middle initial/name is unknown. RyguyMN 04:21, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- The other AP's middle initial is "N". so, we can do that too. WikiDon 05:52, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- I'm for reverting back, as well, after seeing this. My moving of the page wasn't vandalism; I didn't know that there were specific ways to do this, and I didn't think anything wrong. Move it back. But I promise you, this wasn't vandalism. Ksy92003(talk) 06:21, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

- Sorry, Ksy92003, I just thought it was odd that anybody would name a page Adrian Peterson (Minnesota Vikings running back). WikiDon 16:57, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- It's okay. I knew that Minnesota Vikings running back looked extremely awkward, but I didn't know that there was a naming convention for this; I didn't even think about it. Ksy92003(talk) 00:35, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- I think since there is only one Adrian L. Peterson on Wikipedia, we do not need the (football player) added to the end. That adds a whole other level of complexity. Technically, it should be (American football player). So, we should try to avoid this at all costs. Just Adrian L. Peterson should be fine.↔NMajdan•talk 15:46, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
I think we have a consensus here to move. WikiDon 16:57, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

- Adrian N. Peterson (I just moved this one) —Preceding unsigned comment added by {} (talk • contribs)
I have moved this page to Adrian L. Peterson on the basis of a note on my talk page and a read through of this discussion. If it turns out not to be the case that there is consensus for this move, please revert it and place a listing at Wikipedia:Requested moves to bring in outside opinions. Thanks! Dekimasuよ! 05:24, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
This page has been shuffled around a lot in the last few days, and I have moved it back to the original title so it can be discussed here. I attempted to link WP:PRECISION in my edit summary, but got WP:NC (P) instead (just goes to show you that precision is necessary). It turns out that the naming conventions for people advise against disambiguating by middle initial when the person doesn't actively use it, but this is a special case because the usual disambiguator (profession) is shared by the two people we are talking about. I'll try to get the naming conventions shortcuts sorted out; in the meantime, where should this go? The plain title is ambiguous. Dekimasuよ! 09:13, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
- Since one (this one) is the primary topic (see WP:D#Primary topic), this case is not special: since there is no need for a disambiguator, it doesn't matter whether the usual disambiguator would work, by WP:NC (P), WP:PRECISION, or any other guidelines. WP:NC (P) shows its preference for the common name Adrian Peterson. "Ambiguous" titles with a primary topic are okay. See Kevin Smith vs. Kevin Smith (actor) (they are both actors), or Michael Jordan vs. Michael-Hakim Jordan (they are both basketball players). -- JHunterJ (talk) 13:25, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
- It's a little strange to be talking about this based on the move discussion from October; my point was that previous discussion indicated that there wasn't a primary topic. However, it's clear that the "newer" Peterson has become considerably more famous since that time. The page continues to be shuffled around and this time we ended up with two dab pages (I've cleaned that up). I really think another RM discussion is necessary here. Dekimasuよ! 01:08, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Seeing how there are two Adrian Peterson's and this one is considerably more high profile than the other, I think the title should stay but Adrian Peterson should be redirected to Adrian L. Peterson with an otheruses template at the top.↔NMajdan•talk 03:02, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Since Adrian Peterson already redirects here, why not just rename it to that? This Peterson is much more high profile than the other one. Also, nothing else refers to him with his middle initial. It makes a lot more sense to me for this to be named Adrian Peterson.--JDDJS (talk) 20:42, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

The result of the move request was: Page not moved. Adrian Peterson only redirected here as someone vandalised the DAB page to change it to a redirect. That has now been corrected. Thus:- you will have to show that this Adrian Peterson is far more significant than the other one, in order to be declared the primary usage Ronhjones (Talk) 00:09, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Renaming
This Adrian Peterson is without a doubt more notable than the other Adrian Peterson. The other Peterson was released and is currently not even on a football team. This Peterson is considered one of the best running backs in the game and has been to the Pro-Ball and has much better stats than the other one. I follow football very well and I know that 99% of the time, when they say Adrian Peterson, they mean this one. And so nobody thinks I have a conflict of intrest let me establish right now that I am Dallas Cowboys fan and I live in New York. Yet everyone I know who follows football knows about this Adrian Peterson and only a couple of the really big football fans now about the other one.--JDDJS (talk) 15:02, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- If you want visual prof, do a Google search for Adrian Peterson and see how theres way more about this Peterson. And for the record, while nobody supported my request, nobody opposed it which means its 1-0 in favor of changing.--JDDJS (talk) 15:05, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- Also I think you are jumping to conclusions with the vandalism charge. Aren't you suppose to assume Good Faith? Maybe the user shouldn't have done it, but vandalism seems like an exaggeration. He/She just thought what I did, about how this one is more notable.--JDDJS (talk) 15:12, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
I think this issue has been handled with a degree of ineptitude by more than one person. Maybe the "Adrian Peterson" page should not have been changed to a redirect without discussion, but this was probably a case of someone being a bit too bold rather than vandalism, the move request should not have been snowballed out. I am cautious about judging this as I do not know much about American football, but since "L" has a considerably longer article than "N" then there is a prima faciae case for saying he is more notable. Unless anyone objects I may re-submit the move request. If "L" is more notable it is a moot point whether his article should have it in the title. There would be no need for a disambiguation page, a hatnote pointing to "N" would suffice. PatGallacher (talk) 19:04, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
- I have already re-submitted the move. Please support it so it gets done.--JDDJS (talk) 19:23, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

- Comment The first part is a legitimate move request, but the second is misconceived. As we only have two Adrian Petersons, if one of them becomes the primary meaning the other should be a hatnote, we do not need a disambiguation page. PatGallacher (talk) 19:33, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
- Support - Very much more notable. oncamera(t) 00:03, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- Support Current Adrian Peterson NFL player far more notable than prior. Dayewalker (talk) 00:05, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose - I don't think the heightened notability of this Adrian Peterson is enough to have him at the primary article. The other Adrian Peterson has had a fairly long NFL career.►Chris NelsonHolla! 00:31, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- The article already lists "Adrian Peterson" redirects here. For the former Chicago Bears running back, see Adrian N. Peterson at the top, so I don't see why the first part can't be removed and keep the second part after the move takes place. oncamera(t) 00:42, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- Support - The other Peterson had 1,283 career yards, This Peterson had that many in his rookie season. Plus Adrian N Peterson is no longer in the league. GWST11 (talk) 00:36, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- Support - This Peterson is far more notable. —Lowellian (reply) 05:21, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
- Support, subject to PatGallacher's comment. I've always thought it odd that this Adrian wasn't deemed the more notable. No disrespect to the other Adrian Peterson, but that's exactly what they've been calling Adrian N. since the days when All Day was tearing it up at Oklahoma: "The Other Adrian Peterson".--Arxiloxos (talk) 05:46, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
- Neutral. The risk of confusion is very high[2] and the Chicago Bear's Peterson was pretty well known, but ALP got 7 times more hits in May than ANP. Fences&Windows 15:53, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
- Comment Almost everyone agrees with the change. I made the request 22 days ago. It was suppose to end after 7 days. Why hasn't it been changed yet? waiting for?--JDDJS (talk) 19:17, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
- Comment While I agree there's consensus here, we should probably wait a few more days. I've just linked to this conversation over at Talk:Adrian N. Peterson to see if there are any differing opinions there. Dayewalker (talk) 21:17, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Link absent from hatnote
The hatnote should contain a link to Adrian N. Peterson, the article on the former Georgia Southern and Chicago Bears running back. Damon Killian (talk) 19:29, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
- His bio page now carries the title Adrian Peterson (American football, born 1979), and I've edited the hatnote accordingly. --Arxiloxos (talk) 21:45, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
Sidebar link incorrect
The link in the sidebar which says
College: Oklahoma
actually links to the Oklahoma State Cowboys football page instead of the Oklahoma Sooners page. Maybe someone can fix this, I don't know how.
2005 Vacated Victories
I think, if the wins that were vacated in 2005 are relevant to the Adrian Peterson article, it should also be noted that ruling was appealed and reversed thereby reinstating the wins: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3258745 — Preceding unsigned comment added by AMP81 (talk • contribs) 03:16, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
- I may have missed it in the article, but I don't see anywhere in this article that mentions the Sooners vacating any wins, so there's no need to introduce anything about the wins being reinstated. – PeeJay 11:58, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Adrian Peterson beat his 4-year-old son's scrotum
The police say that Peterson beat his 4-year-old son's scrotum, back, buttocks, ankles, and legs.[2][3]
Peterson sent a text message saying, among other things, “Got him in nuts once I noticed" about beating his son's scrotum.[4]

Should this article be titled "Adrian Peterson (American football, born 1985)"?
Should this article be titled "Adrian Peterson (American football, born 1985)"? If not, why is "Adrian Lewis Peterson" the primary topic for "Adrian Peterson"? --Jax 0677 (talk) 19:48, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
- This was decided in 2010, when a consensus agreed that this Adrian Peterson was significantly more prominent than the other running back of the same name. See Talk:Adrian Peterson/Archive 1#Requested move (and the neighboring discussions on that archive page). I don't think anything has changed that; his recent troubles would only contribute to his notoriety. --Arxiloxos (talk) 22:47, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

I ranked this article "CLASS B". Due to the expanded visibility that Peterson will be getting, this article will get a lot of views and needs to reviewed, watched carefully, and possibly upgraded in content, and then in class. Thanks to RyguyMN (talk · contribs) for all of his work on this article. If he keeps it up it could go to FA status. Thanks again. WikiDon 21:27, 14 October 2007 (UTC) |
