Of little importance, but

why is there a [sic] ? I don't identify any typo.

It's because the quote implies that Dante was German, which he wasn't. Back on 9 July 2021, someone removed Dante from that quote, which goes against the manual of style's rules on maintaining original wording when we quote something, even if it contains a large error. The MOS says that "[i]f there is a significant error in the original, follow it with {{sic}} (producing [sic] ) to show that the error was not made by Wikipedia." So on 12 February 2024, when I discovered that someone had fiddled with a direct quote, I reverted them, readding Dante to the quote, but also added the sic template to let future readers know that we know Dante wasn't German. You are correct that there is no typo; it's because the quote (or possibly the way we are quoting that source, I can't tell which as I don't have access to the original) contains a factual error. If someone else has access to the original, and can come up with a way to rephrase that section so that we can stop implying Dante was German, we can remove the sic template again. 188.176.174.30 (talk) 03:29, 21 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
