Talk:Actions against memorials in Great Britain during the George Floyd protests

Earl Grey and slavery edit

It may surprise readers that Earl Grey appears on the list of those with associations with slavery whose statues are subject to calls for removal. It was during his premiership that slavery in the British Empire was abolished after a renewed parliamentary campaign in 1833.Cloptonson (talk) 13:30, 22 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Undiscussed name change edit

B. M. L. Peters what was your reasoning behind the move from "Actions against memorials in the United Kingdom during the George Floyd protests" to "Actions against memorials in Great Britain during the George Floyd protests"? -- DeFacto (talk). 12:11, 6 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

DeFacto On the page and other related pages to the George Floyd protest it seems that when mentioning Ireland there was no mention of the two different polities on the island, Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland, while United Kingdom is mentioned as so, having simply "Ireland" should be complimented with having simply "Great Britain" or "Britain". As for this specific article, and others relating to memorials, in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland there were protest, but no memorials removed or changed. If my move was a problem however, please revert! B. M. L. Peters (talk) 19:22, 6 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I move that most articles of this nature are country based, not landmass based, so this should also be country based. If something regarding Ireland needs splitting into Northern Ireland (or United Kingdom) and Ireland (Republic of Ireland) then so be it. I posit that the majority of the world has no idea what Great Britain is. Canterbury Tail talk 23:04, 6 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I would support a move back to Actions against memorials in the United Kingdom during the George Floyd protests, partly for consistency with George Floyd protests in the United Kingdom. It's untrue that "when mentioning Ireland" on the page "there was no mention of the two different polities on the island", as Ireland wasn't mentioned on the page. I do see the point that this phenomenon occurred in Great Britain but not in Northern Ireland, but that doesn't make "in the United Kingdom" incorrect – at least, not for England, Scotland and Wales. Jersey, on the other hand, isn't in Great Britain or the United Kingdom, so the statue of George Carteret should be split off to a dedicated article and linked to in the "See also" section here. What about the monuments and memorials introduced because of George Floyd/Black Lives Matter? edit

Hello Wiki people,

In Wolverhampton, UK, there was a blue plaque memorial put up in memory of Paulette Wilson, a Black British immigrant rights activist. It is the first blue plaque in the UK (and the world?) to commemorate the "Black Lives Matter" movement. Perhaps this would be of interest to this page, and maybe in future there will be more monuments added. See recent article in the Guardian and picture of memorial[1]

Perhaps there should be a section for memorials added in the aftermath of George FLoyd protests?

That blue plaque is not verifiably connected to George Floyd nor Black Lives Matter. FDW777 (talk) 21:21, 25 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
