Correct Nomenclature of the Tawny Coster edit

Acraea violae is not the good name of this butterfly.

The good name is Acraea terpsicore Linné 1758, described as Papilio (Heliconius) terpsicore (the first description for the Acraea family). To get information on this mistake, see the article: "Acraea terpsicore (Linné), problèmes de nomenclature et données biologiques (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae)" in Bull. Soc. Ent. Fr. 102 (5): 405-412 by Bernaud & Pierre. First stages are described.

Dominique Bernaud

Thank you for bringing this to attention. Torben Larsen also seems to suggest this change based on the priority principle. Unfortunately none of the major reference lists have made the amendments. It would be ideal if the changes are reflected in LepIndex (NHM, UK, [1]) so that we could merely refer to it. We could of course make the changes soon if there is consensus here. In view of the fact that the major sources used to refer for this butterfly subproject, namely LepIndex and Savela, still refer to the butterfly as Acraea violae, it is proposed to keep the article as Acraea violae. Acraea terpsichore can be made a redirect. The reclassification can also be mentioned in a taxonomy section in the article.
Interestingly, this source from the Nymphalidae Systematics Group lists Acraea terpsicore and Acarea violae as separate species.
The citation of Bernaud et Pierre lacks the year of publication and initials of authors to be a complete reference.

From what I remember A. violae should now refer to the African species. Full citation on the article page. Shyamal 14:41, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Shyamal, we dont have direct access to the article. Just because its been published does it mean we change. If neither Marrku Savela nor LepIndex have accepted it we should go with majority but cite that its now being reclassified with violae as main link and terpsicore as subsidiary. Where is the citation that violae is African...? It always was restricted to India and Sri Lanka, its an isolated relict Acreiid. If and when the mainstream accepts the name change, we can revert immediately. So I say, go for violae, its a well established name which people recall. Regards, AshLin 16:58, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Markku Savela's page [2] mentions this that Torben Larsen in [BK] Larsen, Torben B., 1996; The Butterflies of Kenya and their natural history specifically treats terpsicore as the Indian species. Most of the Indian works that we have easy access to are written for field identification and taxonomic or systematic work is limited. The Acraea group systematics has been worked only recently as seen by the dates of publication and Pierre and group seem to have contributed greatly to it as seen in the references on the same link. LepIndex may have missed out on this as well. Majority based on old publications should not be the criterion for the decision. If it is a recent correction, I guess we should update the info accordingly.

In view of what you say, we may not change the page locations but definitely the violae synonym needs to be figure prominently in the article.AshLin 02:59, 6 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I can add to the discussion that "terpsicore" is the first description of Linné for Acraea group. This description cannot be a synonymous.

Further Suggestions edit

Hello, I am a student taking a behavioral ecology course hoping to further develop this article. Here are a few suggestions I have to improve its clarity and content. Overall, the article:

  • is well written and easy to read
  • addresses many topics
  • has many helpful illustrative pictures

It would be good to find other reliable sources for new information to expand this article in the future as it has a limited number of references. There are also grammar inconsistencies throughout the article that could be cleaned up to make the article more professional. There are some suggestions for changes I would make about formatting:

  • I believe the Upperside and Underside sections for Male and Female descriptions could be altered for both clarity and neatness.
  • For the “Distribution, habits and habitat” section, I recommend possibly separating the information into just three different smaller sections: “Distribution,” “Habits,” and “Habitat. This way, the article will flow more smoothly with a neater layout.
  • The “Habits” section could also be categorized under a broad “Behavior” section as well, which would be strengthened with the addition of sections on mating, territorial, and feeding behaviors.
  • The section on “Mating plugs” could then be relocated under “Mating Behavior.”

Overall, this article is informative and off to a great start, although it has much potential for improvement. J.j.lee (talk) 02:58, 15 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
