Talk:Achieved status

International perspective edit

The tag at the head of the article indicates that this article is too narrowly focused, and I agree. I went ahead and added a section about stratification and achieved status on an international level, and I think that will partly resolve the issue. I think the article also needs a section on current research, and in that section studies from a range of societies could be discussed. Finally, I think the article is making great progress, congratulations to everyone involved and especially to righty007, who has made many of the edits. --Htw3 20:35, 17 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

More Notes edit

You have a good start here. You have definitely broadened the scope of the article and the tag at the top of the page should disappear soon. Some minor improvements are still needed.

  • In the opening paragraph the term "assume" is a bit problematic. You may want to use a different term that more closely implies achievement- such as accopmlishes.
  • You may want to be a bit more clear on your definition of ascribed status. Try to make a connection between this type of status and broader social forces. Your example is good, but try to add on a broader definition.
  • The cultural capital section is good. You should probably note the theorist Pierre Bourdieu as he is commonly noted as the first person to conceive of this idea. You also might want to note how cultural capital is similiar to economic capital (specifically how differences in the control of cultural capital influence one's chances at upward mobility).
  • Your section on education is a bit outdated. Certainly your material on industrialization is accurate but not as relevent in post industrial societies like the United States. You could update this by noting how the importance of technology- specifically computers- has changed what types of education are valued today.
  • You need to cite your sources in the Employment section.

Otherwise, this is an excellent start. Great job.
