Talk:Accordion reed ranks and switches

Latest comment: 4 years ago by Gravensilv in topic Added to category:accordion

To anyone noticing duplicate content in this article and the accordion article

edit

The accordion article, due to its length, is currently being compartmentalized because of the indefinite nature of that instrument and the many different configurations it can be in. As such, this and other articles will be in use as soon as possible when they have been created and content converted to the new format. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Reed classifications

edit

Done some work - my problem is that I would prefer the way they are set out to be (from the top) highest sounding to lowest sounding.

I'll change them later - busy now - unless any objections.

I've made an attempt at fixing the rows. Also tried changing icons to be more accurate. I hope you can use this to improve it further =) Necz0r (talk) 09:31, 6 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
We need some information on whether or not the middle reed rank is in the chamber to fit with the definitions of http://henrydoktorski.com/images/misc/Accordion_For_Composers_1.jpg and http://henrydoktorski.com/images/misc/Accordion_For_Composers_2.jpg in order to achieve ultimately accurate icons. Update: The same book as I'll use to provide illustrations for various accordion-related things happens to have a chart with this and proper organ terminology, however, doesn't include nicknames and organizes it a bit differently. But in that source there's an implicit understanding of which middle-reed dot is for what, for all three. I will adapt the table to this when I have time. "there's an implicit understanding of which middle-reed dot is for what, for all three"
Both tables look very good now - I like the way the first one looks especially. Separating the 'foot-length' reed pitch stuff from the 'timbre names' to the other table massively improves clarity and works well! This page looks close to removing the 'construction' tag IMO - now we need good verifiable links to lock it all down. FoolesTroupe (talk) 05:40, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cassotto

edit

This has been moved up to the top. Sorry to say, but IMO it now interrupts the flow of concepts and is potentially confusing - in the middle of talking about reeds and switches, suddenly we are off talking about 'internal boxes modifying timbres'...!!! It is an uncommon (expensive) arrangement (only appears on the more expensive boxes from certain manufacturers & only important for certain styles of music if the box has it) among the bulk of boxes I have come across anyway - which is why I added it at the end of the section just for completeness (being related to the production of timbres). If anyone is really unhappy with it being after the other material, perhaps they could suggest if it could be moved to another more relevant page/section?

Sorry, I see your point, moved it back down. Necz0r (talk) 23:03, 11 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

"The box sometimes has a means of opening or closing to vary the sound."

I have never seen this. I have seen many accordions with a "mute" switch. But this is on the grill and opens and closes the grill. It has nothing to do with the chamber inside the instrument. Are you absolutely sure about this quotation? If not, I think we should remove it. I don't believe it is correct. Henry Doktorski (talk) 00:41, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Henry, it seems to me you believe too much in standardisation. Having visited Stradella and Castelfidardo repeatedly, I have seen lots of little tricks invented by ingenious builders. They need to differentiate from their next-door colleagues/concurrents, after all. I can well imagine someone introduced a mechanism to disable or short-circuit or bypass the casotto. Frankly, should something be removed because, of all people, you have never seen it?
OTOH you might well be right, I can well imagine this text was posted by someone confusing with the mute switch you mentioned and which is certainly more common. Best of all would be to have an illustration or citation to support the mention, of course. Jan olieslagers (talk) 17:37, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wow!

Really happy with this article. Congratulations to all editors. Henry Doktorski (talk) 00:38, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Kitty?

edit

I love that there's a cat in the picture of the ranks of reeds. Naptastic (talk) 00:45, 9 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Yes! "Accordions. Cats. Life is good." AnotherOnymous (talk) 02:26, 4 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

I don't think this will be too controversial. This article is directly related to accordions and only accordions, and its inclusion in the category is consistent with the inclusion of the article on Cassotto. Gravensilv (talk) 13:02, 27 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
