When Are Subjects in Folklore Not Actually Folklore?
editSo I tried to find anything on the Internet (that, you know, wasn't already referencing this article) about Abura-sumashi, and considering that Google Books only had 7 entries with the term (none of which were older than 2009 and 3 of which only cite Wiki as their source) I am curious to know if this is really is Japanese folklore subject or should belong in some anime category? Duende-Poetry (talk) 22:35, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
I did a search using the Japanese term (油すまし)in Google Books, and turned up a few results、some of which were from much earlier than 2009 (the earliest one I saw was 1907, and was able to preview the relevant entry in a book from 1977). So it appears at least to predate appearances in anime and on Wikipedia. Caracal-eyes (talk) 06:10, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
Aburazumashi?
editCan whoever asserted that that is the critter's true name provide a reference? Even the Kaī-Yōkai Denshō Database which seems to be relatively free of Mizuki/Sekien influence only brings up a result for "sumashi". Kotengu 21:05, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
Hmm...the Japanese page has the spelling "Aburazumashi" (with a ず) in the article body, but the title is "Aburasumashi," (with a す) and Japanese sources from outside Wikipedia also seem to be spelled "Aburasumashi." So, I'd go with the "-sumashi" version. Caracal-eyes (talk) 06:33, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
