Needs references for assertions, despite open source text. Britannica doesn't always get it right.

Start classification edit

This article has been classified as a start. It needs sourcing to identify the 1911 Britannica contributions and the short biographical dictionary components. Capitalistroadster 00:49, 28 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please help overhaul this page! edit

As an 18th century scholar, Cowley is a little before my period and not particularly well-known to me, but on a quick read-through I found one major error and one glaring omission, which I have endeavored to correct: namely, the status of Cowley's epic poem "The Civil War" (which the previous version stated had been destroyed by Cowley and never published - this is the major error), and the problem with Cowley's introduction of the Pindaric Ode form into English (the glaring omission). I included a citation for the bit I added on the epic, but I didn't think it was terribly necessary to include a citation for the issue of the ode, since a) it is common knowledge to poetry scholars, and b) this issue is addressed on the "Ode" page and I included an in-text link. If anyone thinks it needs a citation though, let me know and I'll come up with something.

But seriously, this entry needs a complete overhaul. Especially, the piece is loaded with opinion and bias that is presented as if it were fact - and lacks any references whatsoever. I'll do what I can, but as I said, I'm not a Cowley scholar. If anyone out there knows anything about him, his poetry, or his critical reception over the last few centuries, PLEASE take a minute to edit this page. This is really one of the most egregious entries I've run across because while it seems to be lengthy and detailed, those details are incredibly suspect - but since he's a minor figure in literary history, most readers won't know enough to question the so-called facts and will likely come away with a badly skewed idea of Cowley.
