Etymology

Abies means "fir tree" in Latin, plain and simple. I have no idea why anybody would say that it means "rising one"; but whatever the reason, it is utterly wrong. And albus means white, or (when contrasted with candidus), dull or matt white; certainly not "dead" white. On the contrary, the connotations of albus are always positive.
