I noticed something interesting.

It states "Dostum is a Muslim." However, he is listed under "Afghan atheists". I find that to be contradicting. --Pgecaj (talk) 20:49, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Remove humorous nickname

I recommend removing the nicknames noted in the first line (Heavy D, D. Diddy) because they are not serious. They cite a National Geographic article, which (1) does not mention D.Diddy at all, and (2) only uses Heavy D to humorous effect. Dostum is a muslim and I gave him the nickname "Heavy D" which is only used by a select few who know him personally. Reason for locked article?

There should be a stated reason for the article not being editable. It is currently full of subjective spin, including the characterization of the Soviet intervention as an "invasion." The label was applied in the West during a tense period of the Cold War, at a time when the US government was hiding the truth about the situation. Responsible media today would not use a word like "invasion" to describe an intervention requested by a government, or by a governmental faction involved in a civil war. "Invasion" is generally reserved for uninvited incursions; the Soviets were already deployed in Afghanistan per the government's request. Even when they assassinated Amin, they were acting at the request of his opponents in the government. Dostum

Actually Dostum was part of the Pro-Soviet communist regime and that is where he got his rank from. When he turned against the Najibullah regime, the soviets were long gone. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.181.10.60 (talk) 21:11, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Involvement in heroin production

Lawrence Wilkerson in a recent interview with the The Real News Network states: "Dostum is now running the huge... they're not just passing the raw opium product anymore - Dostum is now running a huge state-of-the art factory inside Afghanistan which is producing the heroin." I suggest this should be included in this article. Perhaps corroborated with other sources. I'd also be fascinated to get more information about this heroin factory, its geographi coordinates for one thing. __meco (talk) 12:44, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Seems like this is a perfect example of where Wiki should endeavor to separate facts from fiction and view their role as being an encyclopedia rather than a soapbox for random vandals. Its clear that Dostum doesn't have fans (he did seriously kick the taliban's butt right? and has ethnic rivals to his region) But I personally would love to see the truth behind many of these allegations or rumors.For example Wilkerson will say just about anything to get press Would love to get the GPS coordinates from Mr Wilkerson for this "State of the art" factory. On November 24, 2001 (change from 2000), 300 Taliban soldiers retreated after the Siege of Kunduz by American and Aghan military forces. The taliban laid down their weapons a few miles from the city of Mazar-i-Sharif. They eventually surrendered peacefully to Dostum.
