Dubious (resolved) edit

The embryos' "genome" was altered by injecting them with antithrombin? What nonsense is this? I went to the reference and it did indeed say that, but clearly it was in error—if the experiments had rehabilitated Lamarck; I think we would have heard more about it.

There's a certain current within WP that is too mechanical about the use of sources. There needs to be some use of the critical faculty, when the source obviously has it wrong. --Trovatore (talk) 19:53, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I see this has now been corrected by BorgQueen. Good work. --Trovatore (talk) 20:04, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Does it look okay now? Thanks for your sharp eyes. (I obviously need some coffee.) --BorgQueen (talk) 20:06, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Looks fine. Sorry about the rant. I hadn't had my coffee either. --Trovatore (talk) 20:55, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

why goats? edit

I haven't been able to find out why they use goats instead of cows or something —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pelirojopajaro (talkcontribs) 23:32, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Might have something to do with the fact that it's being produced via milk and goats milk has different properties to cows'? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.16.34.166 (talk) 14:13, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think transgenic cattle were hard to make until recently (see PMID 19038921) so the technology wasn't there at the time. There is also a balance to strike between making large amounts of the protein in large animals like cows, against having animals that breed and reproduce more quickly, like goats. A general review on the topic is here. Tim Vickers (talk) 17:30, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Also, in the same vein, goats are much smaller than cows, therefore they need less space to house them and less resources to feed them; much like the use of drosophila in labs, but drosophila can't be milked... yet... -- MacAddct1984 (talk • contribs) 17:26, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
