Looks like this was not the original design of the trophy:

  • 2003 [4], 2006 [5] (photo 8 of 33)
  • 2021 [6] - is the one in the article even the current design?

Williams Trophy (1941–1947) edit

AP traveling trophy #1. (Traveling trophy #3 following the lineage of the two Dickinson System trophies.)

Retired by Notre Dame in 1947.

O'Donnell Trophy (1948–1956) edit

AP traveling trophy #2: Rev. J. Hugh O'Donnell Memorial Trophy

Retired by Oklahoma in 1956

Bryant Trophy (1957–1965) edit

AP traveling trophy #3.

Named the 'Associated Press Trophy', not given a name by Oklahoma. Renamed the Paul W. Bryant Trophy upon retirement by Alabama.

Retired permanently by Alabama in 1965. Currently in the collection of the Paul W. Bryant Museum.

AP Trophy (1966–1977) edit

AP traveling trophy #4.

Won permanently by Notre Dame in 1977. Does it have a name?

Retired by Notre Dame in 1977. In 2013, resided in the trophy case at the Joyce Center.

Bryant Trophy (1978–1989) edit

AP traveling trophy #5. Named "Bryant" after the death of the coach in 1983.

Retired by Miami in 1989. Currently in the collection of the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.
