• re-attachment of once-attached conference logo, for nonprofit, educational use under Fair Use provisions for scholarly purpose of AI@50 article (and also, Fair Use claimed because of significant ($200,000) U.S. governmental DARPA funding for conference, as cited in article: image URL http://www.dartmouth.edu/~ai50/images/logo.gif

I understand Springer's journal Minds and Machines charges authors $3,000 for "Open Choice" option, allowing a version of public (hardly open) access, but other options exist -- draft or pre-publication version, self-archived or institutionally archived or deposited at, say, http://www.philpapers.org See Springer's Self-Archiving Policy

Not trying to put any particular author or publisher on the spot for doing what is still all too routine in academia, but I'm genuinely interested in making this Wikipedia page the definitive portal for accessing publicly-funded reports on the status and prospects of AI@50. And I would like to encourage the AI community to embrace Open Access. A year after proprietary publication is long enough. The apparent absence of promised DARPA publication of conference proceedings after two years is frustrating; publication of public goods for private profits is disturbing. Linked to Peter Norvig's photo gallery of conference participants -- he has linked to this page for years and I'm glad to have finally updated scholarly refs. One book already citing this historic conference, Nils Nilsson's The Quest for Artificial Intelligence, is highly recommended to anyone who cares about last 50 years and rest of their lifetime. Restoration of Notes and Comments

The links I originally made (July 2006) to the truly unique and very useful notes and comments of sole conference blogger Meg Houston Maker (whose work inspired this page) were deleted by an admin back in December 2011. This was apparently based on a misunderstanding all around - I thought it was Meg's wish, based on her edit tag of "possible conflict of interest"; admin thought that edit was possible link spam (she innocently redirected my original links from her former company domain name to her new personal domain name, close to her Wikipedia user name); Meg may have thought I somehow knew what was going on. I didn't, until looking at history on her User page today.

I am restoring these links to her conference blog entries as highly informative adjuncts to the much briefer conference summary published by conference organizer James Moor in AI Magazine. Paulscrawl (talk) 23:18, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
