5.1 ( 6-channel sound )
editI'm thinking about making this an article; any thoughts; yes. no? I dislike the surround sound article. Daniel Christensen (talk) 00:37, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Requested move

The result of the move request was: page moved per discussion below. GTBacchus(talk) 05:32, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
See discussion at Talk:8 channel audio#Requested move.
5.1 and 7.1 are both esoteric titles that mean little to those unfamiliar with the subject, and large numbers of English speakers would be in this category. The longer, more descriptive titles are also in common use, unambiguous, and should be preferred. Andrewa (talk) 17:54, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
- Support as nominator, see reasons above. Andrewa (talk) 17:54, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
- Support for same reasons as above. --Sujayt 17:01, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
- Support per nom. No-brainer. I don't think this is a controversial move, so I think you could be bold and move this page, 8 channel audio, 10.2, and 22.2 without proposing the moves on the talk page first. Also, since the target articles don't exist yet, you don't need admin intervention to make the move. SnottyWong talk 22:23, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- Correction: 7.1 surround sound does exist, so a proper move for 8 channel audio would require admin intervention. SnottyWong talk 22:28, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
Discussion
editAlthough I haven't nominated them a this stage, if this move goes ahead I'll of course be proposing similar moves for 10.2 and 22.2. Andrewa (talk) 18:02, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Apparent inconsistency
editThe main Surround sound article says, in its History section:
- 5.1 surround sound originated in 1987 at the famous French Cabaret Moulin Rouge.
This is inconsistent with this article's claim that it dates back to 1976. Citations needed to resolve I guess.
low freq
editthe article says the ".1" is "low frequency" but it would nice to know how low, e.g. related to the other 5 channels. 212.29.231.179 (talk) 09:17, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
- Dolby Digital standard says 120 Hz. http://atsc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/A52-201212-17.pdf --Kjoonlee 04:55, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
SACD?
editGlorious surround sound is one of the primary attributes of SACDs, yet they don't seem to be mentioned anywhere on this page.
Thousands are available globally, and the site sa-cd.net consistently tracks and reivews what becomes available, month after month. Thanks for listening -- ResearcherQ (talk) 14:48, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
Subwoofer position?
editThe article contains 2 diagrams that show the positions of the 5 full-bandwidth speakers but no clear mention of the location of the low-frequency/".1"/subwoofer. I believe it's position is considered less important/precise than the others, but someone who knows more should probably add some information about it. Eight40 (talk) 16:45, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
Encoded in two channels?
editI have a Harmon/Kardon AVI 200II amplifier that has outputs for 5.1 but its inputs are all stereo. Is it possible to record the information for 5.1 in just two channels? If so, would someone please include that information in the article. If not, please explain how the 5.1 information is transmitted from a DVD or Blu-ray player to an amplifier. 5.1-EX
editThe meaning of 5.1-EX should be explained. --Mlang.Finn (talk) 16:26, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
THX is a system?
editTHX is not a system or a format, it's a certification/quality assurance system for existing systems (such Dolby Digital and DTS). 92.11.193.175 (talk) 15:01, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
