The Army Air Forces were represented by the 34th Composite Aviation Corps (34 Sak), later renamed the Air Force of the 40th Combined Arms Army.   • From the territory of the USSR, 3 bomber aviation regiments (bap), 9 heavy bomber aviation regiments Long-Range Aviation (Tbap) and crews of 17 separate helicopter aviation regiments (OVAP). Subordinate to the Air Force of the 40th Combined Arms Army were 7 separate security battalions (bo - in essence motorized rifle battalion on BTR), 8 separate battalions of airfield technical support (obato), 9 separate companies of airfield technical support (orato), 7 battalions and 3 companies of communications and radio technical support (obsrto and orsrto).

The Operational Group of the Central Asian Border District (KSAPO, ru:Среднеазиатский пограничный округ) was headed by the deputy chief of the KSAPO border troops, consisting of 7 people.[1] From 1980 under the control of the Moscow border detachment, it was intended to lead the actions of the consolidated combat detachments in Afghanistan.

Special units of the KGB of the USSR edit

  • Operational-reconnaissance combat detachment "Cascade" and the Training Center for Afghanistan (Detachment "Omega"). They operated from the summer of 1980 to the spring of 1984. The detachments were engaged in both reconnaissance and search operations to destroy bandit formations and instructor activities to train security officials of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.[3]
  • Alpha Group personnel conducted two-month missions to Afghanistan to gain combat experience. The operational combat groups operated from November 1982 to March 1987 as part of the motorized maneuvers and air assault maneuver groups as part of the 47th Kerkinsky Border Detachment of the Central Asian Border District.[4]
