Talk:401st Air Expeditionary Group

Objective Wing edit

Although the 401st Tactical Fighter Wing redesignated as the 401st Fighter Wing on 1 October 1991 at Torrejon, it did not convert to the Objective Wing model until moving to Aviano. Its conversion at Aviano was directed by DAF/MO Letter 299r, 2 May 1992, Subject: Organization Actions Affecting Certain United States Air Forces Europe Units. This letter constituted a new 401st Logistics Group, redesignated the 401st Combat Support Group as the 401st Support Group and the 401st TFW Hospital as the 401st Medical Squadron, but did not redesignate or activate an Operations Group for the wing.

For future editors, on 9 April 2006, the 401st Air Expeditionary Wing was redesignated the 401st Air Expeditionary Group. Therefore, the current 401st Air Expeditionary Group traces back to the 401st Fighter-Bomber Wing, not the 401st Bombardment Group, so post 2006 information does not belong here. --Lineagegeek (talk) 20:30, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
A little more research and correcting assignments in the lineage section. If the 401st TFW had converted to the Objective Wing completely, its operations group would have had to be a newly constituted group because the wing and group were consolidated in 1984. --Lineagegeek (talk) 22:35, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

What unit should be here? edit

In view of the fact that the post 2006 401st AEG had been active longer than the brief period, I have added a hatnote but think consideration should be given to moving the wing here and returning the group to its Fighter-Bomber designation --Lineagegeek (talk) 20:30, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Seems like the two pages need to be merged. I'll leave this for comment by interested folks before the folks who don't like USAF consolidations insist on two articles. If two articles are called for, when is the split? 1945? 1951? 1957?

Proposed merger edit

For the above reasons, the group and wing are the same unit and have alternated their designations three times.--Lineagegeek (talk) 19:21, 16 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
