Declared candidates

edit

Is it time to do up the candidate tables? The Liberals have more than 20 announced candidates and the PCs claim to be at 18 nominated. G. Timothy Walton (talk) 03:29, 1 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Riding article creations/edits

edit

Due to the electoral boundaries being redistributed for this election, articles about provincial ridings will need to be created or modified. Would any editors, potentially with an interest in Canadian politics, like to help in making creations/modifications in preparation? There's no rush, as the election won't be happening until later this year, but I'm curious to know if anybody else would be interested in working on the riding articles for when the necessary updates need to be made.

The other day I noticed that two upcoming ridings, Champdoré-Irishtown and Fredericton South-Silverwood, were redlinks so I created articles for them just to start them off and edit as updates are gradually made. I did notice a couple redirects that will eventually need to be created, and all of the affected ridings will have to be updated. Thanks, B3251 (talk) 00:56, 7 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

IP edit warring

edit

IP 159.2.242.81 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) has violated the WP:3RR by making a fourth revert and given that my attempt to offer an explanation on their talk page as to why multiple editors are removing their additions was reverted (showing they are aware of this), it’s likely best at this point to make a WP:AN3 report; I had made an additional warning about edit warring on the IP’s talk page prior to their fourth revert. I won’t have free time until later in the day, so pinging involved editors @CanadianWikiUser @Skylerbuck @G. Timothy Walton if anybody would like to make a report or share thoughts. Thanks, B3251 (talk) 04:53, 30 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Edit: as I was making this section, IP has made a fifth series of reverts. B3251 (talk) 04:55, 30 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
I put in a request for page protection last night. Looks like we're next in the queue. G. Timothy Walton (talk) 13:20, 30 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Two months' protection. Excellent. G. Timothy Walton (talk) 20:29, 30 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the protection request. B3251 (talk) 21:44, 30 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

NDP Candidates Need Update

edit

Please update NDP Candidates Tanya Roberts is no longer affiliated with the party and has not been for several weeks. Additionally please switch Cyprien Okana in Moncton Northwest to Alex Gagne source ablom on party Facebook Page. 2607:FEA8:C467:7400:6D20:673B:1231:3CD3 (talk) 23:38, 29 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Parties

edit

There are six parties running, is there some reason only four leaders and parties are named in the sidebar of information? the removal of party info PonceDeLeonTheLesser (talk) 07:19, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Some pages have only the top four parties included, some have any party that won a seat in the previous election; I suspect it's the second but I'm not the original editor. The NDP wasn't included even before the Libertarian Party was registered. The NDP has been included in some previous NB election pages, so a case could be made for including both or excluding both on this election.
There was some discussion at the federal pages about how many parties to include but the PPC supporters eventually won that battle. G. Timothy Walton (talk) 11:21, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also FYI @PonceDeLeonTheLesser, your publishing of Libertarian Party of New Brunswick fails WP:NORG. It shouldn't have been published as you already had a draft that was not reviewed before its deletion. Your only edits are regarding this party and many of the edits you've made fails WP:PRIMARY due to using the party's official website to attempt to establish notability.
Potential WP:COI? Pinging @G. Timothy Walton for thoughts. B3251(talk) 13:52, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
As clarified on the talk page, I'm not a member of the LP, I'm not even in NB [nor an adjacent province], I just saw the news and figured it deserved an article - only a single fact is sourced to their website and that's the date of their constitution, everything else is sourced to third-party news articles. Obviously I am surprised the NDP isn't listed, and agree it should be as well. PonceDeLeonTheLesser (talk) 14:45, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Where would you have seen it on 'the news'? You started creating the draft before any news publications gave the party any coverage. Even then, it's only been slightly covered on the Telegraph-Journal and on l'Acadie Nouvelle. Given that you also uploaded an image of the party leader leads me to believe that there is at least some form of WP:COI involved, but it is objectively impossible to find out about this party's incorporation on 'the news' if said news hasn't even covered about it yet. It makes even less sense that someone from nowhere near New Brunswick would be so notified, interested and informed about this party more than politically active New Brunswickers. B3251(talk) 16:44, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Do you think perhaps I have voted Libertarian in one of the two other jurisdictions in Canada that have a Libertarian Party? That doesn't put me in a conflict of interest, any more than your voting history or newsletter subscriptions put you in one...indeed by merit of presumably residing in NB you're in a bigger conflict of interest than I am, lol. Image of the party leader was by emailing and asking for one, and the reason I had to put in the President's name later is because I likewise had to email to ask them who the party president was. Elections NB website just gave email address. Falsely claiming it's all sourced to the website, when literally only the date of their constitution is sourced to them, makes it difficult to give the benefit of the doubt constantly. PonceDeLeonTheLesser (talk) 22:36, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Having an interest in politics and being from NB does not warrant a WP:COI because I'm not affiliated with and/or associated with any of the parties; I am not a member of any of the parties, I have not voted in an election yet, and I have never worked for or associated with any of the parties.
I feel that it is fair to question how you received news about this party's incorporation so quickly before it received any news coverage, and even now it has only been mentioned in two provincial news outlets. It was wrong of you to create the article before your draft application was reviewed because it has not received enough sustained news coverage to pass WP:NORG (two provincial news outlets does not establish enough notability; it is very likely in the future that the party will receive at least some coverage from a few more sources like radio stations and CBC, I would consider it as passing NORG when a few more independent sources give it some coverage). Furthermore, I did not claim that you entirely sourced the article to the website. I'm saying that using the party's official website as a source to help establish notability cannot be done per WP:NOR. (Later comment: this comment was made under the assumption that you still sourced what the party advocated for to the official website. Please see comments below for new comments.)
The line in which what the party advocates for was previously sourced to the official website. Changing the citations to the two provincial articles do not work because they do not specifically state that "this party advocates for x". This needs to be changed to match what is being presented by the sources or removed. B3251(talk) 14:14, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

There's an argument the NDP should be included, as they're polling at over 5%.-- Earl Andrew - talk 14:32, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
And if we include the NDP, the infobox will have an empty space to fill, which the Libertarians should be entitled to if we're putting in unelected parties. I'm fine with including both or excluding both. G. Timothy Walton (talk) 20:09, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

338Canada

edit

Why is this source even on the page? It's just a one-man operation's mathematical model, extrapolating from sometimes very small samples. G. Timothy Walton (talk) 14:40, 21 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

I agree. I think we've decided to avoid using projection models on Canadian election articles in the past. They do tend to be one man operations in this country. -- Earl Andrew - talk 17:56, 21 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Would anyone be opposed to deleting the modelling section? G. Timothy Walton (talk) 01:12, 23 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Bolding cabinet ministers and speaker

edit

Should we stop bolding the cabinet ministers and speaker? The leaders get lost when 39% of the incumbents are bolded. G. Timothy Walton (talk) 01:10, 23 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'd prefer to only bold the leaders, as bolding the cabinet ministers kind of makes the candidate list look cluttered. Plus, cabinet positions don't really have as much prominence as a party leader does in an election. Skylerbuck (talk) 04:52, 23 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
No objections being heard, I'll bring it into line with the federal articles and unbold folks. G. Timothy Walton (talk) 00:39, 25 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Candidates Tables

edit

Hello, I believe there's a policy where parties running in fewer than 50% of ridings in a region would be listed in the other column to prevent the table from getting too crowded. Are we planning to follow this? If so, the PANB and NDP in some regions need to be placed in the other's column. 2604:3D08:7C7F:FF70:D835:C90A:FBCD:A727 (talk) 15:26, 1 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes. Let's wait until nomination day, though.-- Earl Andrew - talk 15:58, 1 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Registrations closed today and the Schedule doesn't list a day for a final list, so what's on the website is probably final.
Sometimes the own-column rule gets overridden if following it would make display worse, so each region should get assessed with that in mind.
* Northern — fine as is
* Miramichi and Kent — fine as is
* Southeastern — Libertarian has more candidates than PANB or NDP, and the latter two have no overlap, so they can easily be combined in Other.
* Southern — PANB can easily meld into Other with only one split cell required.
* Capital Region — as good as it's going to get
* Upper River Valley — Drop PANB into Other and have a split cell.
I'll make the changes. G. Timothy Walton (talk) 02:01, 2 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
All of those changes sound good to me. The Telegraph Journal indiacted that the list is final: https://tj.news/new-brunswick/breaking-just-two-parties-field-full-slate-of-49-candidates-as-deadline-passes Skylerbuck (talk) 02:10, 2 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Column widths

edit

The standings at dissolution and total candidates tables could easily wider, giving enough space for the Progressive Conservatives name to take only a single line. Does anyone know how to fix this? There doesn't seem to be a table attribute setting width. G. Timothy Walton (talk) 00:36, 3 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I don't seem to have that problem, but I've set my default WP width to Wide.Raellerby (talk) 18:13, 10 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Reorder columns

edit

Now that the government has changed, the Liberal column needs to be moved ahead of the PC column in each candidates table, as parties get ordered by seat total, followed by popular vote for unelected parties. Capital Region also needs the PANB column moved to the right of the NDP. G. Timothy Walton (talk) 18:41, 26 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

That's not how we do things, the outgoing government always gets to be in the first column. The order is based on the previous election result. -- Earl Andrew - talk 21:51, 26 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
I wonder why I thought otherwise. Oh well, live and forget. G. Timothy Walton (talk) 23:01, 26 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
