Low-quality image edit

User:BottleOfChocolateMilk has uploaded a number of low-quality screengrabs of living people to the Commons, and then uploaded them to various Wikipedia articles.

A gallery of this editor's uploads is here.

Myself and User:Beeblebrox have removed some of these images, per MOS:IMAGEQUALITY, though there is a dispute about the image on the right, which is used in this article.

The consensus of editors who wrote MOS:IMAGEQUALITY agreed that editors should: "Use the best quality images available. Poor-quality images—dark or blurry; showing the subject too small, hidden in clutter, or ambiguous; and so on—should not be used unless absolutely necessary. Think carefully about which images best illustrate the subject matter." In my opinion, this low-quality image is offensive to the subject. By no means should subjects of a Wikipedia biography pose only for studio photographs, but it is unfair to the subject to add a photo depicting them this way.

Moreover, WP:BLP steadfastly upholds the dignity of the subjects of biographies:

  • "We must get the article right. Be very firm about the use of high-quality sources."
  • "Contentious material about living persons...should be removed immediately."
  • "Biographies of living persons ("BLPs") must be written conservatively and with regard for the subject's privacy."
  • "the possibility of harm to living subjects must always be considered when exercising editorial judgment."

Finally, WP:BLPIMAGE states that "Images of living persons should not be used out of context to present a person in a false or disparaging light."

I haven't yet checked to see if these horrible photos are being targeted toward one particular political party, but there is certainly a possibility that a photo like this might influence a voter.

The image should be removed. Magnolia677 (talk) 11:18, 5 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

This isn't the worst f these images, but it is obviously of very poor quality. I'm no expert myself but I would imagine getting a good image from a screengrab of a you tube video where one person is apparently participating via video conferencing is probably very difficult, if possible at all, and this is a perfect example of that. It's blurry and out of focus and therefore below the standard of what should be used in a BLP. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:16, 5 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism edit

Keep an eye out for Keith Swank, apparently it has been changed to “arsewank”. This is due to users online mocking his surname and has been tending on Twitter. Nusent (talk) 18:24, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
