Orphaned references in 2022 AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualification edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of 2022 AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualification's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "regulations":

  • From 2018 AFC U-23 Championship qualification: "Regulations AFC U-23 Championship 2018" (PDF). AFC.
  • From 2020 AFC U-23 Championship qualification: "Competition Regulations AFC U-23 Championship 2020". AFC.
  • From 2013 AFC U-22 Championship: "AFC U-22 Championship Oman 2013 Competition Regulations" (PDF).
  • From 2016 AFC U-23 Championship qualification: "Regulations AFC U-23 Championship 2016" (PDF). AFC.
  • From 2016 AFC U-23 Championship: "Regulations AFC U-23 Championship 2016" (PDF). AFC.
  • From 2022 AFC U-23 Asian Cup: "AFC U23 Asian Cup 2022 Competition Regulations". AFC.
  • From 2020 AFC U-23 Championship: "Competition Regulations AFC U-23 Championship 2020". Asian Football Confederation.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 22:44, 20 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Afghanistan flag edit

Hello @Nehme1499:, my reason of why the old flag should be used for the current competition as well is that usually on sports page (including the olympics), the flag used is the one which the organising committee specifies. The reasons here are -

  • The ROC flag which was used at the olympics.
  • The stats and the main AFC page and even in the most recent FIFA rankings the old flag is being used.
  • The name Taiwan is not used in the football pages and instead the name 'Chinese Taipei' is used.

What do you think is a valid reason of not using the old flag, other then the reason of the current flag being their current national flag. We should probably solve this soon, or else spamming would start after 2-3 days when the qualification round starts.--Anbans 585 (talk) 17:59, 22 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Anbans 585: I don't necessarily disagree with you, though I have no idea what other sports projects are doing (for consistency). I'll ask the other editors as WT:FOOTY to voice their opinion. Nehme1499 18:01, 22 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Nehme1499: Okay tag me as well to the discussion. As far as I know at least for the cricket pages they have not even replaced the flag for the older competitions. I don't think other sports have as active number of editors as football has.--Anbans 585 (talk) 18:11, 22 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
You've only given one relevant example there, the cases of the Russian Olympic Committee and Taiwan are completely different to what has happened in Afghanistan and have no impact on whether or not we should use the Taliban flag or the flag of the former Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. It would be historically inaccurate to use a different flag to the one in use at the time of any match or competition which is why we should use the Taliban flag for upcoming matches unless or until a different flag is used to represent the Afghan national team. Stevie fae Scotland (talk) 18:46, 22 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think it would be better to use the old flag (as per FIFA and the AFC pages). The flag change in Afghanistan is a complex situation unlike let's say Mauritania (where they just add some stripes). The new flag shares the same flag as a militant organization considered as a terrorist organization in some countries so understandably, organization including sports associations would take the "wait and see approach" and be hesitant to adopt the current flag for the team. So on the contrary, I think we are getting ahead of ourselves if we use the Islamic Emirate flag to represent the Afghanistan team if AFC and FIFA aren't using the new flag yet at least on their online channels.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 05:39, 23 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Nehme1499, Stevie fae Scotland, and Hariboneagle927: As far as the current international tournaments go, the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup is currently on, and there the old flag was used. I think the better thing to do here is to use what the different sport associations use, a note can be provided on the page about the status of the flag. Using the Taliban flag does seem historically accurate, but does not seem right for the competitions where the old flag is even being used for the national anthems.--Anbans 585 (talk) 17:26, 23 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

To me, it's not clear which flag the Afghanistan Football Board will use, not least because their official website hasn't been updated for 2 years. Whilst I think the green/red/black one is correct, it's hard to know. That being said, I believe the green/red/black is correct as the Taliban aren't actually recognised by the international community, so I don't think we should be using their flag anywhere on wiki. For cricket, it was much clearer, as the Afghanistan Cricket Board have continued to use the green/red/black flag in all their publications, and fly that flag at Afghanistan matches. No flags for Thailand and Indonesia edit

Thailand and Indonesia are suppose to not use their national flags in all competitions excluding the Olympics due to WADA sanctions.

However it remains to be seen on how they would implement the ban. What is known is that national flags for both Thailand and Indonesia are banned but they have asked relevant clarifications from FIFA and AFC.

As per Goal.com Thailand basing from rough translation, the AFC has barred the team from using the national flag. In Mongolia vs. Thailand (presumably the other matches as well), the flag won't be displayed on the scoresheet (only the word "Thailand") and flags for both Thailand and the opposing team won't be shown in the customary opening ceremony where both teams enter. The national anthems will be sang normally. Then "symbols can't be used to substitute the Thailand flag" so this could meant that they can't use the flag of the Thai association or any other representative flag of Thailand (but this is an assumption). No info for Indonesia yet but it's reasonable to assume they won't be able to use their flag as well.

I think it's okay to retain the flags here for now unless clearer guidelines emerged for both teams.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 05:49, 23 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Agree. REDMAN 2019 (talk) 11:19, 23 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think editors are being a bit silly here, if the teams cannot use their flags in the physical world, that should not translate to Wikipedia policies for what can or cant be shown in an encyclopedia. Matilda Maniac (talk) 01:47, 24 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Agree to what @Matilda Maniac: has said. The flag is also useful when trying to identify teams in the goalscorers section.--Anbans 585 (talk) 08:56, 24 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I agree that we shouldn't be using flags if they're not actually being used in the event. This seems like common sense to me, and is what's being done for other sports that I've seen. Joseph2302 (talk) 09:09, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Indonesia has prepared the flag of its federation Do we have a free copy of this Indonesian variant flag? If so, we should use that for Indonesia (similar to how Russia can't use its own flag, so we have a neutral flag/flag of the sports organisation listed on articles instead). Joseph2302 (talk) 09:46, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Counterpoint: Flags are not used in the club competitions and yet they are always used at wikipedia as an easy way to indicate where the club is from. --BlameRuiner (talk) 13:27, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
But they haven't been banned from using those flags. Indonesia and Thailand have been banned from using that flag. If they are using no flag instead, we should use no flag, and if they are using a federation flag, then we should use that (if it's freely licenced). This is in line with all other sports articles on the encyclopedia, this article doesn't get to choose to be inconsistent with the rest of Wikipedia just because people feel like it. And the clubs represent their countries, which use the countries' flags (again, Thailand and Indonesia wouldn't currently use their flags either), so I don't see why this should be an issue. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:23, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Just a note can be added regarding this in their respective sections, that would make the argument clear to everyone about the flag issue. Removing it and not replacing it with a valid placeholder is quite big an issue. I think that this can be a better solution than removing the flags altogether.--Anbans 585 (talk) 17:36, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Semi-protection of this page edit

I think this is a good time to semi-protect this page until next month since Indian fans (probably) tried to vandalize with wrong information. It is very annoying to see their edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:6C50:6000:220C:4DB2:1F9:E472:7EAF (talk) 19:49, 1 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
