Protection edit

As we come closer to the election and later during the vote counting, what sort of protection are we going to give this article to prevent vandalism and petty mischief without impeding the freedom to add to the article? Regards Paul Conlinp (talk) 09:52, 10 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

I agree with you Lefcentreright (talk) 14:12, 10 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Sought and obtained protection after persistent vandalism from at least two or IP addresses. Conlinp (talk) 13:23, 8 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Contesting political parties edit

It seems to me that the section on "Contesting political parties" might now be getting long enough to justify/necessitate creating its own page as it is coming to dominate the overall article. Should this be done?--Discott (talk) 10:46, 13 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it should be done. In fact, today, I was debating whether I should create a separate page for the specific section.--Lefcentreright (talk) 12:42, 13 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
I agree, would you like to spin it off?--Discott (talk) 11:48, 16 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Sure!--Lefcentreright (talk) 16:42, 17 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
UPDATE: I have since moved the section. The new article's name is "List of political parties contesting the 2019 South African general election".

Provincial election results edit

Let's discuss the provincial election results and which pages to create before too many different things are done. In previous elections:

I am strongly in favour of all results being listed on the main election page, as is done with 1994 to 2009. I do not like the current 2014 article, where the results are not listed on the page, but all sorts of fluff such as trivial media quotes are.

I am not against ALSO (certainly not only) listing the results on separate individual pages if there is enough content to warrant a separate page.

So, I propose the following:

  • Restore the 2014 provincial election results to the main page. Where there are separate articles, link them. This requires the use of templates (recently a whole bunch of templates I created for 2004 were deleted on the basis that they were only used in one place, but these can easily be restored if used in multiple places - no need at present)
  • Similarly, for 2019, there are already some separate articles (e.g. 2019 Western Cape provincial election created by Lefcentreright, so we can begin to create templates for the results, which will then be used in two places. For any provinces that do not have a separate article, no need for a template. Greenman (talk) 19:33, 25 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Agree with the suggested proposals. Conlinp (talk) 08:48, 26 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi, all - I agree with all the proposals. Now, let's get cracking and create those articles/templates. Lefcentreright (talk) 13:30, 26 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
UPDATE: The separate 2014 South African general election provincial legislature results article's content have been moved to the main article. We just now need to delete the separate article. I would love to propose deletion myself, but, to be honest, I don't know how. Lefcentreright (talk) 14:09, 26 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, happy to see! I've nominated the article for deletion. See Wikipedia:Proposed_deletion for details on how to do this kind of deletion in future. Greenman (talk) 22:27, 28 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations edit

Well done guys @Lefcentreright, Greenman, and Discott: for getting the page up and ready for the election, did a great job. Looks great. Regards Paul. Conlinp (talk) 09:08, 7 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Paul! Now we have to brace us for the BIG one when the results start coming in. Best of luck to you all! Have a great evening. Lefcentreright (talk) 18:16, 7 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks all, happy to see this article is being well looked after, and is already protected after the first vandalism. Greenman (talk) 16:22, 8 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Conlinp, and thank you to everyone else for making this group effort happen. Still more work to do to update it with results and impact.--Discott (talk) 19:05, 12 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Infobox Parties edit

Shouldn't the infobox contain the FF+ party as well?
The top 4 parties are: 57.5%, 20.8%, 10.8%, 3.4%
The top 5 parties are: 57.5%, 20.8%, 10.8%, 3.4%, 2.4%
The top 6 parties are: 57.5%, 20.8%, 10.8%, 3.4%, 2.4%, 0.9%.
The top 5 parties presents a better cutoff (difference of 1.5% between last included party and first excluded party) than the top 4 parties (difference of 1.0%).

HELP! edit

Hi, all @Conlinp, Greenman, and Discott: I please need ALL of your help to complete the article and update the provincial legislature articles. You can make a diagram of the seating composition here, and if you don't know where the colours are, they are here. Lefcentreright (talk) 16:18, 12 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Gauteng Legislature updated. May want to check. Conlinp (talk) 18:03, 12 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Conlinp: Thank you. It looks great. I appreciate the help a lot. Lefcentreright (talk) 18:59, 12 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I am also going to ping @Htonl: to ask if he could create an election map or two like he has done on other election article pages(?).--Discott (talk) 19:03, 12 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I am currently recovering from the effort of fighting the election. :) But yes, I do plan to produce maps as I did for the previous ones. Unfortunately given my position I can't really help otherwise with the writing of the article. - htonl (talk) 19:30, 12 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Lefcentreright: Can you check KwaZulu-Natal Legislature. Can't find my error, Election, table summary? Conlinp (talk) 19:57, 12 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Conlinp: Fixed it! Lefcentreright (talk) 20:18, 12 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks htonl, really appreciate that. It will add a great deal to the article.--Discott (talk) 20:37, 12 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Lefcentreright: Mpumalanga Legislature updated. Please check my work. Conlinp (talk) 12:02, 13 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Lefcentreright: Limpopo Legislature updated. Please check my work. Conlinp (talk) 12:29, 13 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Lefcentreright: North West Legislature updated. Please check my work. Conlinp (talk) 12:45, 13 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi, all @Conlinp, Greenman, and Discott:. Hope you are all doing well. I need your help with creating an "Aftermath" section on the 2019 South African general election article. The National Assembly and NCOP articles also need to be updated. I've covered (most of) the provincial legislatures and premiers. It would be nice if all of the premier articles could have an image. Only three have: Alan Winde, David Makhura and Sihle Zikalala. Hope you all can help. Have a lovely evening. Lefcentreright (talk) 16:40, 22 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Incidents edit

I have removed the Wellington queue incident as it was very quickly debunked by the IEC and recieved no sustained publicity. We need to cover the "real" issues better such as the ink controversy, theft of IEC tents, demonstrations preventing voting, etc. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 13:05, 13 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

I am going to make an effort at these along with the allegation of Russian influence that I see a lot in the media these days.--Discott (talk) 11:36, 19 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Ward winner map edit

Map showing the largest party in each ward.
  African National Congress majority
  African National Congress plurality
  Democratic Alliance majority
  Democratic Alliance plurality
  Inkatha Freedom Party majority
  Inkatha Freedom Party plurality
  Other party majority
  Other party plurality

The ward winner map is now available - see right.

Awesome, thanks htonl. I will replace the current map with this one.--Discott (talk) 11:41, 14 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Any particular reason why we are using the wards used in local election rather than the voting districts the IEC uses for national and provincial elections for the map?--Duncanza (talk) 14:49, 14 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Because the VDs are so small in many cases that the map becomes hard to make out. And, I guess, because that's what we did in 2014. - htonl (talk) 20:30, 14 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Map showing the largest party in each voting district.
  Other party
Tie between two or more parties

I have added a VD winner map (although without the majority/plurality distinction) if it is preferred. See right. - htonl (talk) 06:22, 21 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
