Louis Fenton and Ali Abbas edit
So with the signing of Abbas as an injury replacement for Fenton, should Fenton stay in the squad list? Technically that would take us over our 23 players and Abbas has been offered a 2 year contract with the Nix. Also Fenton will be going onto try get game time with other clubs (in several months time according to twitter [1]) so would that mean at the moment Abbas is injury replacement and then when Fenton goes Abbas continues as in the Nix main squad? - Abbas is technically Fenton's injury replacement for now (official source). No issue being over 23 players given injury replacement status. Indications are Fenton will leave once fit, but not officially confirmed and not yet in any case so for mine he should stay on all relevant lists until further news. - Because he plays international football for Iraq. Indeed due to his Aussie citizenship he is not counted as a visa player (as is detailed in this season's foreign players table). --SuperJew (talk) 05:22, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- I didn't see this here when I made my last edit. I personally wouldn't even use injury replacement at all, as that's not an 'official' term used in world football. The status of another player is irrelevant for what type of transfer the incoming player is. A club can pay a transfer fee to gain a player, a free transfer, or they are a loan signing. It would be relevant in a paragraph discussion about signings, but not in a basic status list. Additionally Fenton has left the club, so Abbas can no longer be an "injury replacement" since the player he was an injury replacement for has left the club. - But it is an 'official' term used in the A-League. The status of another player is relevant - if the player is injured and the incoming player is an injury replacement a team can for example have more than 5 visa players listed (if the injured player is a visa player). The thing I'm not sure about is if Fenton actually left the club or if he's still listed but allowed to play elsewhere. - Team Wellington's facebook page has Fenton as a new signing, and that's reflected on his wiki page, Fenton himself has also posted on his social media that he left Wellington Phoenix & joined Team Wellington FC. Abbas shouldn't be considered an injury replacement now as he's not injury replacing anyone. If you really wanted to be pedantic you could include Abbas twice, the first as an injury replacement for Fenton, and the second as a free transfer (after WP freed up a squad spot by releasing Fenton). You would then have to explain the situation in the notes for the squad. A player can't sign a 2 year contract as an injury replacement which is what Wellington stated they had done. Those contracts are short term for covering the length of an injured player. Not two years. Considering that WP dumped Fenton shortly after to Team Wellington to free up space for Abbas I would imagine the two year full contract (on a free transfer) should supersede the very temporary label of "injury replacement". They have also said they have offered for Fenton to come back next season as well.
