Page needs updating

I've removed some outdated information and provided a reference for newer content I added to replace it, but there is much more work to be done on this article. Content has been added piecemeal according to news stories contributors happened to read, without following the evolution of events. For example, Rajoelina said he wouldn't run, yes, but he's since changed his mind. It's not wrong to include the fact that he said he wouldn't run, but it would be critical to also include the fact that he's let go of that commitment - otherwise readers have the impression that Rajoelina won't run. Not to criticize anyone for their contributions - politics are constantly evolving and it takes a pretty dedicated eye to follow every new turn they take. I'd take this on myself but have too many other Madagascar articles ahead of this in terms of priority. I wanted to raise this issue and hope someone else will have the time to give this article an update. Lemurbaby (talk) 06:31, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

Did you read my diff? It wasn't a complete revert, I kept your update and new reference. However I restored the wikilink to the constitutional referendum (don't see any reason to remove this), 5 words to say the referendum was postponed, and the sentence on the agreement that former presidents can run in the election (which seems highly relevant if Rajoelina is now considering running again.) I'm not sure how any of this qualifies as outdated.

I agree that the article needs much work. That's usually how these articles end up before the election actually takes place. However, the solution isn't to remove content. There's WP:NODEADLINE for the article to be up to date. If you don't have time to fix the issues yourself, you can raise them here on the talk page or add a {{update}} to draw more eyes. The problem with the content about the agreement that former presidents can run is that it isn't accurate anymore. The dispute over whether Ravalomanana can run is the largest remaining sticking point in terms of negotiating an agreement about the legal validity of results from the election when it is held. It's interwoven with the issue of amnesty and Ravalomanana's conviction in absentia by a kangaroo court to hard labor for life; the conviction would technically exclude him from candidacy. This is what SADC is trying to get Rajoelina and Ravalomanana to negotiate. Like I said, there's no problem including factual information, but to leave it hanging out there when it isn't followed by more current facts that show the old information no longer applies is misleading to the point of fallacy. Until someone can add the most recent and correct information, it's best to leave the outdated info out of the article. I disagree. Hiding content because more recent info hasn't been added isn't helpful. Keeping it visible encourages editors to edit and update it. If they can't see it, they'll be less willing to update it. The big tag at the top should make it clear to anyone reading that the article isn't current. TDL (talk) 05:52, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Presidential Candidates

User Lemurbaby commented in his/her edit "Hid opinion poll box until data comes available. Should not list these three candidates' names as this is not objective (why these three and not others?)". While I agree with the first part of the edit (about waiting until data is available), I disagree with the later. I spent countless hours searching for data on exactly who is running for president, but received little to no results from any source, official or not. I, therefore, input the names and affiliated parties of any candidates I could find, hoping that other names would be added as users found reliable information of their candidacy.

In response to "Removed details on the three candidates - again, a complete list should be provided in order not to be selective" and "Providing info on only one candidate can seem like Wikipedia is taking sides. This is more appropriate for an article about this person" I posit we keep this information listed, simply because there is no complete list of candidates (at least none that I have found yet). It is better to provide at least some information on who is running, rather than omit everything because we don't have all 38 names. The purpose of having this list, albeit incomplete, is to encourage other users to add candidate information as they find it.

If anyone has a full list of candidates and their party affiliations, please input them ASAP along with any relevant opinion polls that may have been done. SharpsilveResearch (talk) 16:58, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Citation Issues

For some reason, a new citation I added incorrectly replaced the previous reference [2]. "On 13 May 2009 it was reported that Rajoelina had stated he did not want to run in the presidential election and that he only wanted to lay the groundwork.[2]" - This citation needs to be added again, as it seems there was a technical error.

"There are currently 33 to 38 approved contenders slated to run for election.[2][25]" - This is what should be cited by the reference currently under footnote 2. SharpsilveResearch (talk) 20:03, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Tried to fix it, but now the reference I entered is not appearing and is footnoting [3] instead. Someone with experience in source coding might be better at resolving this issue. SharpsilveResearch (talk) 20:14, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Parliamentary Election Results

I found them on the CENIT website, but the results are listed by district and no nationwide tallies and seats won by each party are assigned.
