Clean-up of past WC pages

I've taken the liberty of adding all CR, WR, PB etc for past World Championships, at least as recorded by the official results on the IAAF site. There were a few errors, notably with the walk times, but generally everything looks accurate.

However, there is one major discrepancy and now that presumably this page will be paid a lot of attention, perhaps the community out there can address this: What is the status of the 2001 men's 4x100 relay gold won by America that year? As the page notes, Tim Montgomery's 100 m silver was rescinded due to the Balco scandal, but the RELAY gold is still listed as America's on the IAAF site (in contrast, when Kelli White lost her medal in 2001, so did the 4x100 relay team and that is reflected on the IAAF site.)

Today, I received a mailing from Track and Field news, their preview for each event of the 2007 WC. And in the past winners section, the men's team is listed as 2001 winners, the women's team is not. Does anyone here have something official stating that, indeed, the men's relay team also lost their gold, as that is what we have on the 2001 page.

AND... it would be great if someone fixed up the 1997 WC page to make it look like the rest of the pages. Canada Jack 16:44, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I contacted the IAAF on this and haven't heard back from them yet. Seems they haven't amended that from 2001 which is odd since Montgomery's medal is gone as are the medals with the women's 4x100. Might be worth adding that link to the note on the 2001 page as they are pretty definitive confirmations of the SA team's gold. Canada Jack 01:19, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

The 1997 WC page has now been cleaned up (by someone else) and now is the format of the other 10 WC pages - and, for the first time, includes the actual times distances and points achieved! Canada Jack 02:41, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

Relay teams section

Why should there? if you look at the 2005 for example, they're all under Track. There's not need to over make articles about this World Championship. You could make a article that is more indeep with all participants in every sport all trails, semis etc. all results for everything... Those pages arent even linked to anywhere but to themselfs... But it still doesnt explain why the Relay section is here... the other sports doesnt have the participants on this page. Delete them, and make a non-linked page if you want. Chandlertalk 15:44, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Corrections (?)

It's possible that corrections are necessary for this page, or possibly to other, conflicting pages. I don't know which it is. This article lists in table form under Men's Results three medal-winners for the 20 km Walk: Jefferson Pérez (Gold), Hatem Ghoula (Silver), and Eder Sánchez (Bronze). I know Pérez really did win, but I sort of thought Sánchez finished second. The individuals' article pages don't help, though. Jefferson Pérez shows he won gold, but Hatem Ghoula says Ghoula won bronze. The article Eder Sánchez doesn't mention medals at all; in fact, it says he came in fourth.
Can someone check these and fix the incorrect page(s)? I can't find anything online yet about the results except for Wikipedia, otherwise I'd be bold. If this page is wrong, the Medal Table at the bottom needs correcting, too. Thanks. -John Hosking 85.2.229.205 11:07, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Here's the thing, when I added the scores from here Francisco Javier Fernández was not there. and if you looke here Spain hasnt gotten a medal there. So i dont know whats right or wrong, IAAF will have to update further (who ever heard of ppl finishing on the SAME second in walk, for second place?) Chandlertalk 11:26, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

[2] (bottom of the page) found some more, it appears that Spain has protested the disqualification of Francisco Fernandez. And got right. So we'll have to see what decided with medals etc. Chandlertalk 11:29, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Medal Boxes

I've been adding medal boxes to all World Championships medalists (going back to 1983) and have established a template that seems to have been pretty well adopted as the medalists from 2007 emerge. I simply standardized what was being done in most places, and there is now a consistent style for all WC medalists. AS it stands, ALL WC medalists from 1983 to 2007 have had their medal boxes standardized, or have been given a medal box. I've not added pages to those medalists who lack one. Canada Jack 15:09, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

Consistent use of metric units

I notice that the use or non-use of metric units in results (ie. Isinbayeva vaulted 5.75 m but Lebadayev jumped 7.03) is not consistent.

As a point of style and consistency, all the past World Championships OMIT the use of "m" as it is understood that the unit used is meters. Similarly, the used of "s" to indicate seconds is not used as the unit in question is understood.

While I am sure there is a good argument to be made to include the units, in my view we already have a de facto style and therefore should omit the units. Canada Jack 15:14, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Major Upsets section

What constitutes a major upset? I know I shouldn't be harsh because it was contributed by a newbie, but really it seems like pure WP:Original Research deciding what was and wasn't an upset. Peter Ballard 12:22, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

I agree. I notice that Tyson Gay's 100 m win is there. But this hardly was a "major upset" since numerous observers picked Gay to win! Such as Track and Field News. There may be some "majorly upset" track fans, upset that their favoured athlete bonked at the games, but I don't think it is our place to denote what victories were "major upsets." It's enough to note that a victor was not one of the leading contenders according to the opinions of track experts.Canada Jack 14:51, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

How about now? It still reads 'to date' almost 3 years before the championships. Should it now be something like 'they were biggest at the time' or there could be some clarification if that refers to 2007 or also after 2009 games. 82.141.75.168 (talk) 05:42, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I checked that, and it is not true anymore. to date means this would be record right now, which it is not. The 2009 World Championships had 2101 athletes which is more than these 2007 games had. This mention should now be in the 2009 WC article, and this changed to something else. 82.141.127.50 (talk) 19:45, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
