Before the swarm began
editInterestingly, I knew about this swarm of earthquakes slightly before they began in 2007. Before the swarm I noticed the Anahim Belt was the only Holocene volcanic zone in British Columbia that did not have any recorded volcanic earthquakes. But I was not exactually sure when the swarm was going to occur or if it was going to lead into an eruption. I just knew the swarm was going to occur in the near future around Nazko Cone. After a few months of thinking about it, the swarm occurred. Because of this, I could easily be the first person to have known about the earthquake swarm, and I'm not too pleased the GSC did not have any seisographs near its location. This has concerned me about future volcanic events, especially eruptions. What would happen if a series of volcanic earthquakes occurred in a remote area like Silverthrone that would evolve into an eruption? The GSC employees would likely have a hard time placing seismographs in the region like what they did to the Nazko earthquakes because of its remoteness and mountainous terrain. And as far as I know, there are no seismographs close to any volcanoes in British Columbia. This is partly why I am so cautious about this kind of stuff. The lack of good monitoring and other necessary stuff in volcanic zones that have been active in the past 10,000 years is not acceptable, even if a volcano has not erupted for thousands of years. Several volcanoes that have not erupted for thousands of years have erupted recently. BT (talk) 03:37, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

New category
edit@Volcanoguy: Re your reversion of the Category change: "Swarms" is certainly more specific than "clusters, swarms, and sequences", but we do have a problem in that "swarms" does not cover all instances of multiple related events, nor are there specific categories for the other classes. I would be okay with subcategories being added here to handle those, but the current task to enumerate the entire population of multiple-events, with subcategorization coming later. ♦ J. - @J. Johnson: According to WP:CAT, categorization of articles must be verifiable. It should be clear from verifiable information in the article why it was placed in each of its categories. I'm curious as to why you created the "Earthquake clusters, swarms, and sequences" category instead of creating Category:Earthquake clusters or Category:Earthquake sequences for events that do not fall under Category:Earthquake swarms. Volcanoguy 00:23, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
- Because I want to catch all of the fish before sorting them out by size (character). I don't even know what all categories these cases might be sorted into, and I certainly don't want to have to make multiple passes through all of the earthquake articles for each subcategory. My first cut is "all articles with 'earthquakes' in the title", which creates a much smaller subset that can be sub-categorized. I certainly don't want to get into any hassles about distinguishing between, say, "clusters" and "swarms", or whether "doublet" includes "multiplet", etc. ♦ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 01:41, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Volcanoguy: BTW, I don't mind putting some of those back into "swarms", but I would want that as a subcategory. How do we make subcategories? ♦ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 22:38, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- Got it. ♦ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 22:21, 7 April 2018 (UTC)
