This page needs to be updated or dropped. The seat is, and always was safe. While Hefley was tossing around the sleeze charges, he delayed announcing his retirement until Crank, who appears to have had advanced notice, was rounding up endorsements. This being a democracy, the voters had some say in who Hefley's successor would be.
