Candidate biographies edit

Already someone's gone and created a page for Ben Abbotts based on his party bigoraphy (but another user NPOVed it). A lot of candidate biographies were created then VfDed around the last general election - should we really be letting Wikipedia be used as a campaigning platform? Timrollpickering 13:48, 5 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

By-elections are a bit more important than general elections. ;)
By-elections are more important than general elections? I don't think so.
But perhaps by-election candidates have greater prominence, even for losing parties, and may be appropriately notable. I don't think we can tell at this stage but the article(s) could be reviewed after the election. Plus, there seems to be no consistency on the VfD process on this - Antonia Bance got deleted only recently although she has wider claims than her candidacy in 2005, but the second placed Conservative in Chester and the Lib Dem in 3rd place were kept for reasons I am still not clear on. Two LibDem candidates from Blaenau Gwent had articles created but these were sucessfully prodded for being non-notable. This should be easy to do again with any non-notable candidates this time round. doktorb | words 15:04, 5 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Who are the Chester candidates? In general Wikipedia needs better guidelines on what constitutes notability for politicians. There's no clear definition of the term (am I one?) and individual VfDs are sometimes left trying to work this one out. Timrollpickering 15:12, 5 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Re Chester: Paul Offer and Mia Jones - something to do with the large swing in Chester in 2005 saved Offer and Jones actually hasn't been nominated. Mtiedemann 15:29, 5 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Erm the Jones page has been deleted.
Isn't the real problem that a lot of people don't know about the existance of articles on failed candidates until sometime after the VfD? Timrollpickering 23:25, 5 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Jones deleted at 8pm last night, with no VfD as far as I can see. At least she was a councillor too, not sure what happened there. Makes the saving of Offer's article seem even stranger, given that Jones was the main recipient of the 'swing' which was claimed to be so notable in Offer's case. Proves the point that better criteria for non-parliamentary politicans are needed - other examples of odd articles are all the one sentence articles for Manchester and Brentwood councillors and the small group of Monday Club articles. Mtiedemann 23:33, 5 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Then I suppose what's needed is somewhere where all the contentious articles can be listed and some standards worked out - or at least a more consistent set of contributors on all the VfDs. Timrollpickering 23:42, 5 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

"By-elections are more important than general elections? I don't think so." - Argueably more useful for political analysts as this is the time when people actually vote the way they think, although it's also been argued that people will use their vote as a protest. Unsigned

Notice of VfD edit

I have just nominated Ann Garrett and Ben Abbotts. Timrollpickering 07:31, 30 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

That was obviously an act of revenge, as you didn't nominate Nigel Farage, who got much less votes than Ben Abbotts. Now do you think you (and other Tories who voted for the deletion) are objective enought that you should edit a dictionary? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.136.183.15 (talkcontribs)
Nigel Farage is the leader of UKIP, a very notable person of a very notable political party. Ben Abbots is a many-times failed candidate. I know which one I would support in an AfD vote. And I have been a member of the Liberal Democrats for six years. doktorb wordsdeeds 09:21, 18 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Is Farage the leader yet? (Although even if he isn't, he's very likely to be soon.) He is already notable as a Member of the European Parliament - all of whom either have pages or are likely to get them soon.
And I note the person throwing around accusations is anonymous. Timrollpickering 11:13, 18 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Note also the current active proposal at Wikipedia:Candidates and elections in response to umpteen pages on candidates being created and VfDed with each election. Timrollpickering 11:16, 18 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Loonies edit

The Official Monster Raving Loony Party appears to be running John Cartwright but other than his own posts on the Vote2006 forum I'm not aware of an online source. Timrollpickering 19:29, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just seen one on his website. Timrollpickering 19:31, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Swing edit

I know we've been here before (see the Newbury byelection page), but as the LibDems finished second and had the largest increase of the share of the vote, and as Labour finished fourth, why the heck is the swing here reported as the "traditional" (but somewhat outdated) Tory/Lab calculation? I thought we'd sorted this out..? doktorb wordsdeeds 16:50, 30 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree. It seems POV to ignore the Lib Dems in this election. I'll remove the swing figure for now. Dmn Դմն 17:07, 30 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Worst Conservative Result 2006 edit

For a result in a Conservative-held seat while in opposition, it is unprecedented. We would have to go back to Paddington South in 1930 or Liverpool West Toxteth in 1924 to find a comparably bad performance by the Conservatives.

Worst Labour Result 2006 edit

It is also probably the first time ever the Labour party has dropped from second place to fourth place in an English by-election.
