One correction. Irish presidents are never 'appointed'. Technically they are always elected. If when the nominations close only one candidate has been nominated they are declared elected there and then. If more than one candidate is nominated, the election is 'postponed' to allow for the taking of a ballot, then resumed after the vote to allow the winner in the contest to be declared elected.
One candidate nominations suck in my opinion (but I would think that. I make money from writing about elections and appearing on RTE discussing them, so this non-election cost me about a grand. Damn you, Enda Kenny!!! :-) ). But we do have to follow the technically correct terms here. FearÉIREANN 18:41, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)
