The reason Mexico was disqualified

edit

Is the sentence

Mexico were disqualified during this stage after having been found to have fielded over-aged players during the 1988 Olympic Games qualifiers which was a youth tournament.

really true?

In 1988 Olympic football games, there are no limit for players' age. (See Football at the Summer Olympics#Changes and developments.)

In RSSSF (http://www.rsssf.com/) there are a description

Mexico was disqualified by FIFA for infringement of age rules in the Olympic Qualifying. (from http://www.rsssf.com/tablesc/conca89.html)

at a page for 1989 CONCACAF Championship. However, RSSSF page about 1988 Olympic football games CONCACAF qualifier tells that

On June 30th 1988 FIFA banned Mexico from all FIFA-sanctioned competitions for two years, due to the falsification of documents concerning the ages of players for the CONCACAF U-20 championship in Guatemala in April 1988; Mexico had used four over-age players. (from http://www.rsssf.com/tableso/ol1988q.html#NCAmerica)

that is, Mexico is disqualified

  • not for 1989 CONCACAF Championship, but for 1988 Olympic qualifier,
  • not because of the age limit violation in 1988 Olympic qualifier, but in 1988 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship.

I guess that Mexico was disqualified not only for 1988 Olympic qualifier but also for 1989 CONCACAF Championship because of 1988 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship.

The problem is that I could not find any other source that confirms the true circumstances. I would appriciate anyone who shows a source article.

Mexico was initially disqualified from competing in the football tournament from the 1988 Summer Olympics for fielding 4 overage players in the Olympic qualified in Guatemala. CONCACAF was forced to give such sentence after sources from El Salvador let their Guatemalan counterparts know about the irregularities in the birth certificates presented at the tournament, Mexican media and elsewhere; Guatemala obviously protested.

The Mexican Federation, in hopes of getting the sentence overturned by one of the Vice-Presidents of FIFA (who was Mexican), sent their case to FIFA for overview. FIFA decided to upheld CONCACAF's decision. In retaliation, the FMF threatened to start talking about some of FIFA's dirty business. Faced with that, FIFA banned the FMF from participating in any tournament organized by FIFA and its affiliates for 2 years (which included the World Cup). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.217.79.50 (talk) 18:22, 14 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your information.
There still remains a problem that why there are the age limit for 1988 Olympics qualifier (the age limit in Olympics football exists from 1992 tournamemt). Are there somebody knowing the circumstances? Sinryow (talk) 15:45, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
