1986 fa cup final
editLiverpools previous appearance was in the 1977 cup final against Man Utd not 1974 against newcastle. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.54.67.50 (talk) 21:17, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
Craig Johnston
editI have amended his flag from Australian to English as he played for England's U21's (talk 12:02, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
Just amended it back to a Eng flag for the reason given above.Statto74 (talk) 14:29, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
And yet again I have had to amend it back to England.Statto74 (talk) 14:16, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
And again!!! This time it was edited to South African.Statto74 (talk) 12:35, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
Me again, someone keeps changing it back to the Aussie flag, HE PLAYED FOR ENGLAND U21'S, FOR THE PURPOSE OF WIKIPEDIA HE IS ENGLISH!!!!Statto74 (talk) 14:13, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
Guess who? Somebody changed it back to an Aussie flag, so I have reverted!Statto74 (talk) 11:14, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
That makes a change, PapbloThePengiun had changed it to a South African flag, though he was born there, he actually played for Eng U21s and therefore should have an Eng flag.Statto74 (talk) 13:06, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
Well it's been nearly a whole year since somebody changed it, Aussie this time, amended once again!Statto74 (talk) 14:35, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
Same old, same old - Changed Craig Johnston's nationality back to the England flag Statto74 (talk) 14:15, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

- Please stop doing this. The statement earlier in the article that Liverpool became the first team to field no English players in an FA Cup final makes no sense if you classify him as English. Pawnkingthree (talk) 02:35, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
- By your logic we should change Mark Lawrenson (born Preston) to an English flag. There are hundreds of players who this applies to, they all carry the flag of the country they played for, it is the way on Wikipedia. Some examples from this game; Kevin Sheedy & Pat Van Den Hauwe, plus other like Ray Houghton, John Aldridge, I could go on Statto74 (talk) 13:34, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
- He represented England because the standards of the Australian team at the time were so low that he said playing for them would be like "surfing for England." It was a career move. That doesn't make him English. He is an Australian national. Can you point to a policy reason for this "requirement" that he has an England flag, other than "it is the way"? Per WP:V and WP:RS we should go with what reliable sources say. For example, the Daily Telegraph: "Craig Johnston, the Australian who was at the heart of Liverpool's most successful squad in the Eighties." Or the Liverpool Echo: "Love for the Reds in his homeland blossomed on the back of his achievements and he paved the way for other Aussies like Harry Kewell and Brad Jones to follow in his footsteps." As I said above, it makes a nonsense of the article's claim that Liverpool did not have any Englishmen in its starting line-up. I'm not going to edit war over something as WP:LAME as this but I will be adding to the article to explain this contradiction.--Pawnkingthree (talk) 13:35, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Pawnkingthree: What ever the reason he represented England is irrelevant, I'm not saying he is, or was English, the precedent has been set elsewhere though; every player requiring a nationality flag on a page has the flag of the country they represented not the one they were born in. There is already an issue with the accuracy of the statement in the text as Mark Lawrenson is English born. As I said above there are 2 players on the Everton side who represented a different country to their birth, are you saying they should be edited?
- @Statto74: All I'm saying is that the article was appearing to contradicting itself. I was aware of the "no English line-up" story, which is fairly well-known, but when I looked at the line-up, Craig Johnston (who I had never heard of) was listed as English without any explanation. I had to go to his article to find out what was going on. We should clear up the confusion for our readers, and I have just added a note to that effect.--Pawnkingthree (talk) 15:56, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
- I won't go into the fact that Craig Johnston never won a full England cap so was still eligible to play for Australia at the time of this match...Pawnkingthree (talk) 15:56, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
- But that would be irrelevant, the page wasn't written at the time of playing it was done after, I'll give a further example; If Ruel Fox had played in the 1998 FA Cup Final he would have a Montserrat flag, despite the fact he only played for Montserrat in 2004.
