Talk:1984 Australian federal election

Why was this election so early? edit

Could someone add an explanation as to why this election was held so soon after the double dissolution in 1983?

Heh, the official reason was something along the lines of "Labor is seeking a mandate to continue its reforms". The real reason was they were well ahead in the polls so it was a good time to call an election. But I'm not sure how Wikify that! Rocksong 05:08, 11 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Timeshift has added the reason "The 1984 election was held 18 months ahead of time, partly in order to bring the elections for the House of Representatives and Senate back into line". I don't believe that could justify holding another election less than 2 years after the last, and I think it would actually throw the houses more out of kilter. But I'm willing to be proven wrong of TS has a cite for it. Rocksong 06:13, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

After a double dissolution the Senate's term is backdated to the previous 1 July - in this case 1982. So a new Senate election had to take place by 1 July 1985. Timrollpickering (talk) 14:05, 31 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
