Medal count

Something is wrong with the medal count, either the stats are wrong, or East Germany had more medals than the USSR. So who really won the games?69.114.83.62 23:47, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

I think the problem is in defining "won the games". Really, it's kind of a meaningless term. But as far as your question goes, East Germany did indeed have more medals than the Soviet Union. But the Soviet Union won more events--they took more gold medals. Wikipedia generally follows International Olympic Committee conventions, including ordering countries in medal tables by top-1 finishes (gold medals) rather than top-3 finishes (total medals), which is why the USSR appears above East Germany here. -- Jonel | Speak 01:03, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

I don't think we should use the phrase "won the games" at all. The medals are awarded to individuals, not to nations. The official Olympic sites never say any country "won the games." MOk (talk) 01:16, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Timing

The point regarding timing makes no sense. The claim is made that the race was won with a margin of 0.01 seconds, or 1/100 of a second. This is given as the reason that timing to 1/10 second accuracy was begun.
