editWasn't it so that the Chile - USSR qualifying game in Santiago really was played - with a full crowd, referee, linesmen an a home team. But no opponent. Chile then started the game, and scored in the empty goal after about a minute or so (all players toched the ball at least once, very carefully so the ball wouldn't go outside the field, nore could they play the ball forward on USSR half, so they would not be offside - all in case of making sure that a correct goal was mede). When the soviets then wasn't able to kick off, the referee finished the game - with the result Chile 1 non present USSR 0 ? The most strange football game in history - if I remember correct.
I was just nine years old and have this in my memory only. I might have got it wrong some how.
More sure am I, that Sweden and Austria got the same point and goal difference in their group (wich also included Hungary and Malta) , and that the rules at the time stated that a single decider on neutral ground should separate the two teams. The game was played in Gelsenkirchen , Germany (at Shalke 04's old stadium) in late november and that a very heavy snowfall threthened th game to be played. In Sweden (and probably Austria also) this game is remembered as "the snow game". Sweden won 2 goals to 1. (half time 2-0 I think) Swedish scorers were Roland Sandberg and Bo Larsson (at penalty) I don't remember who scored the austran goal.
