total rewrite

edit

Removed passive voice, reorganized, spelling errors, etc etc. It's still got a loooong way to go, but it's better IMHO. Personally, I'd like to see more about the actual events in 1964 than the efforts since that time to rennovate the area. Twohlford 06:20, 26 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Good work, and you are correct, it will eventually be an article about about the events, and hopefully link to other articles about the changing and present day situation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.226.197.102 (talk) 00:28, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I was a resident of Chatham Gardens in the middle of 1963. And it was complete at that time. So it was built well before the the 64 riot not after it.

My pregnant wife and I were there on Joseph Avenue on the morning of the 25th. We were well inside the police lines but were well protected by the Chatham Garden residents ..We had 20 or so males out on the opening to Joseph. (It is said those guys pulled the Police Chief off the car he was standing on and spirited him into Chatham Gardens).

Within Chatham Gardens we set up to prevent an attack from the neighborhood. The place was well armed and put out the word that any one who entered best be up front or they would be shot. All of the white people, particularly the noncombatant, Were assigned to Black apartments where they would hide out if it got messy. So on one of the weirdest nights on record we all set out their in our lawn chairs rooting for nothing to happen... and we carried the day — Preceding unsigned comment added by Olecapt (talkcontribs) 00:49, 22 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hey so in the article it says 5 dead (4 in the crash) but on the side it ways 4 dead (3 in the crash). Which is true? -AWaffle6027 — Preceding unsigned comment added by AWaffle6027 (talkcontribs) 16:19, 29 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

The fifth death was Colonel Abbott, who died a month after the riot from wounds in the helicopter crash and is not counted in some contemporary sources. I have updated the article to reflect this. Kodak03 (talk) 05:42, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
