Dates of championships

I came to this page to check whether my memory of the 1963 championships was correct and was surprised to find it reported that they ended on 5 July, which was a Friday. Either the source is wrong, or it has been misinterpreted.

In those days there were no matches on Sundays. The men's singles final was played on a Friday and the Saturday programme began with the women's singles final (I think they called it "ladies' singles" in those days). In 1963 it rained on Saturday 6 July and the final day's programme was postponed until Monday 8 July. I know, because I went there on the Monday. For the modest entrance fee we were given free access to Centre Court and we saw Margaret Smith (later Court) beat Billie Jean Moffitt (later King). This match was followed by three doubles finals. Margaret Smith played three matches that day and won two of them.

I searched online for evidence to corroborate what I thought I remembered and I found this:

JULY 7, 1963

WIMBLEDON, England, July 6--Rain washed out Billie Jean Moffitt's bid for the United States' second singles crown at Wimbledon today. The women's singles and three doubles finals were delayed until Monday.

LynwoodF great that you got to see Margaret Smith and Billie Jean Moffitt play at Wimbledon! Your info on the date of the four finals is corroborated by Alan Little's Wimbledon Compendium so I have corrected the date and added some info in the lede on the postponement of these finals. Will check at the Tennis Project talk page on our policy of listing scheduled versus actual tournament dates in the infobox. Thanks for the info.--Wolbo (talk) 11:51, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

Wolbo, Thank you for your rapid response. I see that you have left the scheduled date as 5 July, a Friday, and I also notice that the end date for 1962 is given as 6 July, again a Friday. I recall that year after year the championships ended on a Saturday. Has Alan Little got this wrong, or has he been misread? I suppose it seems strange to anyone under 50 that the men's singles final was a relatively obscure event which most of us could not watch live on TV. LynwoodF (talk) 13:03, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
