Loyola-Los Angeles? edit
Cbl62, can you point me to the discussion regarding "Loyola-Los Angeles"? I don't see any articles named with "...Loyola-Los Angeles..." Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 14:51, 28 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Jweiss11: It was a couple months ago in college basketball talk page. The focus was Loyola Chicago, but I presented common-usage evidence there that Loyola Los Angeles should also be short-formed by city rather than state. If I recall correctly, the only Loyola where the state was a common usage was Loyola (MD). Cbl62 (talk) 15:57, 28 May 2022 (UTC)

- The form "Loyola (CA)" does not imply an explicit statement of "California" in the common short name. It's an implicit, parenetical disambiguator. Using "Loyola (Los Angeles)" doesn't imply an explicit statement of "Los Angeles" either, and it introduces an entirely new element of style here, using a city, rather than a state code, as a disambiguator. I don't know that that's necessary a bad idea given than the standard thus far has been to use "Loyola (LA)" to denote the Loyola Wolf Pack of New Orleans, Louisiana (LA), which I can see being confusing—does LA mean Los Angeles our Louisiana? But there's certainly no precedent or consensus around using a city as a disambiguator. Perhaps this needs some discission at WikiProject College football? I found the WikiProject College Basketball discussion: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College Basketball/Archive 8#Loyola Chicago vs Loyola Illinois? What came out of that discussion introduced a novel inconsistency between the way a team's articles are named and how they are short-name displayed: Loyola Ramblers men's basketball vs. "Loyola Chicago" (and sometimes "Loyola–Chicago"), cf. - A couple or three thoughts in response:
- * "Loyola (LA)" has long been a bee in my bonnet. Every time I see it, my first reaction that this is a reference to Loyola of Los Angeles. This plays a small part in my prior support for using city names when it comes to "Loyola of Chicago", "Loyola of New Orleans", and "Loyola of Los Angeles".
- * I would be fine with any of the following formulations "Loyola-Los Angeles", "Loyola of Los Angeles" (which was the actual school name prior to the merger with Marymount), "Loyola Los Angeles", or "Loyola (Los Angeles)". My goal is simply to move us away from the ill-suited state disambiguators for the Loyolas and toward more suitable city disambiguators --- "Loyola (MD)" being the exception where the state name is commonly used.
- * I don't think a further discussion is needed, given the prior discussion at College Basketball Project. I think we are OK simply being bold and acting in a manner consistent with that discussion. Cbl62 (talk) 23:38, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
