"The precursor to the hurricane was first noted on August 12 as a tropical disturbance by several ships in the Gulf of Mexico.[1] " sounds weird I suggest changing that to "The Freeport hurricane was first noted by ships on August 12 as a tropical disturbances in the Gulf of Mexico.".
